Aichi’s French opposite Stephen Boyer in attack against Bluteon

The ninth leg in the men’s volleyball Daido Life SV.League in Japan was highlighted by stellar clashes between JTEKT Stings Aichi v Osaka Bluteon, in which the two star-studded squads traded victories. Suntory Sunbirds Osaka capitalized on the situation to widen the gap from Bluteon at the top of the current standings, while Wolfdogs Nagoya also took advantage to overtake Aichi in third place. Nippon Steel Sakai Blazers and Toray Arrows Shizuoka put together two five-set thrillers with the visitors from Shizuoka winning both.

In front of well over three and a half thousand spectators on each of the two competition days of the weekend, Osaka Bluteon started off with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22) sweep of Saturday’s game at JTEKT Stings Aichi. Three players – outside hitters Shoma Tomita and Cuba’s Miguel Lopez, and opposite Yuji Nishida – led the winners with 12 points apiece, while Aichi’s French opposite Stephen Boyer topped the match chart with 14 points. The home team got back at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship silver medalists with a 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-16) comeback victory on Sunday. This time, Boyer and Aichi’s American outside Torey DeFalco shared the top scorer honors with 21 points each. Bluteon kept their second place in the table, now on a 14-4 win-loss record and 40 points, while Stings descended a spot, to fourth place on 12-6 and 36.

Table leaders Suntory Sunbirds Osaka consolidated their position on top of the standings with two home victories over Tokyo Great Bears. The visitors, however, managed to push them to five sets in the first game on Saturday before the defending champions could celebrate a 3-2 (24-26, 25-21, 19-25, 25-13, 15-9) win. Outside hitter and captain Ran Takahashi contributed a match-high 24 points to Suntory Sunbirds’ success, including one ace and one kill block. The home team was more convincing on Sunday, when they took their opponents out in straight sets, 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-23). Takahashi once again led his team to victory, with a team-high 16 points, including two aces and a block, while Tokyo’s Argentinean outside Luciano Vicentin topped that with 18 points, also including two aces and a block. Suntory Sunbirds have now improved to 17-1 and 49, while Tokyo are on 7-9 and 21, falling one position down to sixth place.

Expectedly, Wolfdogs Nagoya claimed the full six points from their home double header against Nagano Tridents and surpassed JTEKT Stings Aichi in third place on 13-5 and 37. Nagano stand second from the bottom, in ninth place on 3-15 and 13. The first match went 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-16) Nagoya’s way with 18 points from top scorer Kento Miyaura, including two aces and a block. The second game was resolved in straight sets, 3-0 (28-26, 25-20, 25-21). Outside Akito Yamazaki led the winners with 14 points, while Nagano’s Canadian opposite Matthew Neaves delivered a match-high 26, including three aces and three blocks.

Toray Arrows Shizuoka achieved two away victories at Nippon Steel Sakai Blazers and improved to 5-11 and 14 in eighth place. Despite earning two points, Sakai are still stuck at the bottom of the table, in 10th place on 3-15 and 10. In Saturday’s match, Russian opposite Kirill Klets hammered out a team-high 31 points, including four aces and three stuffs, towards Toray Arrows’ 3-2 (22-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 15-13) reverse-sweep win, while his Danish counterpart Ulrik Dahl produced a match-high 32 points, including three aces and a block, for Sakai. On Sunday, the visitors put together a 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 21-25, 26-24, 15-11) victory with outside Tobias Takeshi Shigeto leading the way with a match-high 20 points, all in swings.

The 10th leg of regular season action will offer a full set of five double headers on January 10 and 11.
