Winless in their last two matches in the 2024-2025 Brazilian Women’s Superliga, Osasco São Cristovão Saúde brought their tough run of form to an end in an emphatic way on Saturday, taking down the top team in the tournament.

The 2012 world champions fed from the energy of their fans at the José Liberatti Stadium to take down current Superliga leaders SESI Vôlei Bauru with a massive straight-set victory (25-16, 25-19, 25-19) in the fifth leg of the second round of the regular season.

The result immediately bumped Osasco, who went down from second to fifth with their consecutive defeats, two positions up in the standings. They now appear in third place with 35 points (11 wins, five losses) and can only be passed by one team until the end of the leg.

SESI, who were undefeated in their last eight matches, stay in first place with 36 points (12 wins, four losses), but can be passed by both Dentil Praia Clube (35) and Gerdau Minas (33), who are yet to play.

Star opposite Tiffany Abreu led Osasco’s offense with a match-high 18 points – she had 12 kills, five blocks and the game-winning ace. Olympic champion Natália Pereira came next with 16 (15 kills, one block), followed by fellow outside hitter Maira Cipriano, who tallied 11, all in kills, and took home the match MVP award.

“The two losses hit us hard and we were working a lot to bounce back,” Maira reflected. “We knew this was going to be a tough match and that we would enter the court carrying some extra weight because of the last results, but we were confident from the start and played very well. I hope this victory can boost our confidence because we know what we’re capable of, but we just couldn’t perform at our best.”

Bloqueio duplo de Natália e Valquíria para Lorenne

SESI had Paris 2024 Olympic medalist opposite Lorenne Teixeira as their leading scorer with 14 points (13 kills, one block), followed by Venezuelan outside hitter Roslandy Acosta, who registered 11, with eight kills and three blocks.

“We were really focused on this game, but we couldn’t execute what we trained,” Lorenne explained. “Our serve was really soft and that’s a mistake you can’t make against a team with such firepower as Osasco. They blocked very well and played great defense, but I think our lack of aggressiveness was what killed us tonight.”

Both teams will now focus on the Brazilian Cup, which will have the Final Round next weekend. Osasco will face Minas in one semifinal, with SESI meeting Praia in the other one.
