Playing on the road, in Rio de Janeiro, Minas trailed Fluminense twice on Thursday, but counted on the firepower of their left-handed opposite to come out on top of the five-set battle between the teams, winning 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 15-10).

The two points earned with the victory made Minas jump from third to second place in the standings with 19 points (seven wins, one loss), three behind league leaders Dentil Praia Clube. Fluminense got one point in the match and remain in sixth place with 11 points.

With a solid offensive performance, Kisy carried Minas’ offense, tallying an impressive match-high 34 points, with 32 kills, one block and one ace. She was awarded as the player of the match,

“It was a tough match for us, we made way too many offensive errors,” she said. “But managing to get the win at the end shows our strength. We couldn’t have made those errors, but we never gave up. I’m happy about the award, but also very aware that we need to improve. Other difficult moments will come and we need to be ready to overcome them.”

The team coached by Italian Nicola Negro also got 13 points (12 kills, one ace) from Dominican national team outside hitter Yonkaira Peña and another ten from Brazilian Olympic champion middle blocker Thaisa Menezes, who left the court with five kills, three blocks and two aces to her name.

The second-best scorer in the Superliga, Fluminense’s opposite Ariane Pinto almost tied Kisy’s production, registering 29 points with 24 kills, three blocks and two aces. Former Brazilian national team players Amanda Campos, with 11 points (ten kills, one block), and Lara Nobre, with ten (five blocks, four kills), one ace, also got to double digits in scoring.

“We were too inconsistent, especially in the second and fourth sets,” Ariane reacted. “We had the match under control, but some details went their way and the game escaped from our hands. But I’m still very proud of the team’s performance. We fought until the end and that’s what you have to do to succeed in the Superliga.”

Minas will play their next match on Tuesday, when they host SESI Vôlei Bauru. On Wednesday, Fluminense will also be in Belo Horizonte, where they will go on the road against Batavo Mackenzie.
