After earning 12 consecutive victories, 2025-2026 Brazilian Women's Superliga leaders SESC RJ Flamengo endured their first defeat in the tournament, and it was delivered by their biggest rivals Fluminense.

The two teams met in the popular Fla-Flu Derby at the Maracanãzino Stadium, in Rio de Janeiro, on Sunday, and after many turnarounds, Fluminense came out on top, triumphing 3-2 (16-25, 25-20, 25-22, 14-25, 15-8) in the match that opened the second leg of the second round of the regular season.

Flamengo continue at the top of the standings with 34 points (12 wins, one loss), but could see the gap to second-placed Gerdau Minas, who have 29 and are yet to play, drop to two. The two points collected with the victory made Fluminense move one spot up in the standings, going from sixth to fifth, with 21 (nine wins, four losses).

High-scoring opposite Ariane Pinto carried Fluminense's offense in the Derby, producing a match-high 31 points (26 kills, five blocks), and earned the match's MVP award. Middle blockers Lara Nobre and Lays Freitas and outside hitter Amanda Campos contributed 11 points each.

"It's a Derby, and we knew it was going to be a huge match," Ariane reflected. "We were coming from a tough result, in a match in which we made way too many errors, and one of our goals for today was to cut them down, as we were going to play a very good team, which was undefeated for a reason. Fluminense is known as the 'Team of Warriors', and I think that today we honored that nickname. I'm happy to see us being able to bounce back after some difficult results."

Flamengo had American outside hitter Simone Lee as their leading scorer with 25 points (20 kills, four blocks, one ace), while opposite Tainara Santos and middle blocker Lorena Viezel scored 17 each.

"Both teams know each other very well, and we knew that details would be the difference tonight," Lorena reacted. "I think it took us a little too long to adjust to some changes they made, and they also struggled with some of the things we did. They did serve very well, though, and got us out of system offensively. We knew it was going to be close, and at the end of the day, I think that the team that managed to do things right for the most time prevailed."
