Brazilian powerhouse Dentil Praia Clue managed to continue at the top of the standings in the country’s 2024-2025 Women’s Superliga at conclusion of the seventh leg of the second round of the regular season thanks to a comeback win over SESI Vôlei Bauru.

The teams met on Saturday, in Uberlândia, with the top spot in the standings on the line and Praia benefited from the homecourt advantage to recover from a slow first set to come back and win 3-1 (16-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-14).

The 2024 FIVB Men’s Club World Championship semifinalists got one step closer to ending the Superliga regular season in first place as after starting the weekend with a two-point lead over their main challengers, they now have a four-point advantage over second-placed Gerdau Minas (44 points to 40). SESI are third, with 39.

The victory was also the first of the Uberlândia side over their Bauru opponents this season – SESI had prevailed on both their encounter in the first round of the regular season and their duel in the semifinals of the Brazilian Cup, two weeks ago.

Praia’s Russian outside hitter Sofya Kuznetsova led all scorers with 19 points, all in kills. The team also counted on their veteran middle blockers to score as, while London 2012 Olympic champion and team captain Adenizia Ferreira produced 14 points (eight kills, six blocks), Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Carol Gattaz added 13, with nine kills, three blocks and one ace.

Backup setter Ju Carrijo also played a major role off the bench, coming in during the second set for Olympic medalist Macris Carneiro and leading the team’s comeback. She was awarded as the Player of the Match.

“I was happy that I was able to help the team tonight,” she said. “It was a very important match for us, even from a confidence standpoint, as we had lost twice to them this season. We really wanted to continue in first place and I’m glad we did it. Everyone who came off the bench did a great job.”

Led by Olympic champion setter Dani Lins, SESI had four players getting to double digits in scoring – Venezuelan outside hitter Roslandy Acosta (13), opposite Bruna Moraes (12), middle blocker Mayhara Francini (11) and outside hitter Kasiely Clemente (10).

“We started very well, but they made some changes that worked,” Mayhara reflected. “It took us a while to adjust to how they were playing and we also started struggling with our passing and our side out. They deserve a lot of credit, but we’re frustrated because we never managed to get back into the game.”

The two teams will have tough matches next Thursday, with SESI hosting Minas and Praia going on the road against fourth-placed Osasco São Cristovão Saúde.
