The 15th leg of the Italian men’s volleyball SuperLega Credem Banca is coming up with six interesting matches this weekend – one on Saturday, January 10, and five on Sunday, January 11. Sunday’s big clash between defending champions and table leaders Itas Trentino Trento and third-placed Rana Verona is certainly the game in the spotlight.

Itas Trentino Trento will host Rana Verona in Sunday’s opening game, serving off at 17:00 local time (16:00 UTC) at a sold-out BTS Arena. The champions are on top of the current standings on 35 points and a 12-2 win-loss record, while their visitors are running third just a point behind, on 34 and 12-2. Trentino are riding the wave of a 13-game winning streak between the SuperLega, the Italy Cup and Europe’s CEV Champions League, but the last defeat they suffered was at the hands of Rana. When they visited Verona on November 2, the home team beat them in four sets. The all-time head-to-head record between the two clubs, however, stands heavily in favor of Trentino, 36-14 in wins.
“We hope this is the right time to break Trento's winning streak, but it will be very difficult because we're facing a team that is currently the strongest in the league. It will be a wonderful return to a place where I spent two years and where so many people loved me. We'll need all our best volleyball. It's the only way we can hope to stay as close as possible to them in the various sets. We must approach the match with a lot of energy and conviction.” Fabio Soli, head coach of Rana Verona
The SuperLega weekend will open on Saturday at 18:30 (17:30) with another clash between the first and the third, but counted from the bottom of the table. In a game relevant to the survival in the league, rookies MA Acqua San Bernardo Cuneo will entertain Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina. Cuneo stand in 10th place on 9 and 2-12, while Grottazzolina are stuck in 12th on 4 and 1-13. November’s game between the two teams at the Savelli hall went the way of the visitors from Cuneo in straight sets.
The remaining four games of the leg will serve off at 18:00 (17:00) on Sunday.
In the most exciting of these four fixtures, reigning club world and European champions Sir Susa Scai Perugia will welcome Valsa Group Modena to the Barton Energy hall. Sir are running in second place on 35 and 12-2, with a lower set ratio than leaders Trentino. Modena are just two positions below them, in fourth place on 31 and 10-4. The previous match between the two in Modena in November was won by the visitors from Perugia in four sets.
Fifth-placed Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza are set to host Vero Volley Monza at the Banca Sport hall. They stand on 26 and 8-6, while their visitors are in eighth place on 12 and 4-10. Gas Sales swept November’s match in Monza by 3-0.
Cucine Lube Civitanova, standing sixth on 25 and 8-6, will entertain Sonepar Padova Padua at the Eurosuole Forum in Civitanova Marche. Padova occupy ninth place on 11 and 4-10. They upset last season’s silver medalists in a five-set battle, when they hosted them in Padua in November.
The Allianz Cloud will stage the match between Allianz Milan and Cisterna Volley. The hosts from Milan are in seventh place on 23 and 8-6 and their visitors from Cisterna are second from the bottom, in 11th place on 7 and 3-11. November’s match in Cisterna di Latina went 3-0 the way of Allianz.
