Itas Trentino Trento v Cucine Lube Civitanova

The sold-out stands at the ilT quotidiano Arena await Itas Trentino Trento and Cucine Lube Civitanova for another exciting and unpredictable encounter on Sunday, May 4, at 15:20 local time (13:20 UTC). Last Sunday, at the same home venue, Trentino mastered a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-21) shutout of Lube in front of four thousand spectators in Trento to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Lube took their turn in shutting out the opponent at home in Thursday’s 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-22) sweep of the second-leg game, tying the score in the championship playoff.

The long-lasting rivalry between Lube and Trentino has already had 105 editions, with the club from Civitanova leading the all-time head-to-head record by 57-48 in wins. The two teams have already met six times this season alone, splitting three victories apiece. Besides the first two games of this playoff, Lube beat Trentino in December’s SuperLega home match and in January’s Coppa Italia semifinal, while Trentino defeated Lube in December’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship semifinal and in February’s SuperLega home encounter.

It is the fourth time in history these two clubs lock horns in the SuperLega final. In 2012 and 2017, Lube emerged victorious with the titles. Two years ago, in 2023, Trentino triumphed as champions. Trentino are now aiming at their sixth national championship crown, while Lube have already collected seven titles.

“The first two challenges of the series were very different from each other. The two teams exploited their qualities to the maximum in front of their home fans. Now I expect even more extreme scenarios than those experienced in the previous matches. We will be even more subjected to the need to obtain the result in the face of an opponent, who will do everything to prevent us. This will be the challenge on the court and it will be up to us to accept it with serenity, determination and with the sole intent of always expressing the best of ourselves. The profound respect for our opponent requires equal consideration for our talent and our abilities.” Fabio Soli, head coach of Itas Trentino Trento
“I expect a complicated challenge, like the first two. The finals are as beautiful as they are difficult. We must not think too much, but show up in Trento calmly and then sweat for every ball and put the best volleyball possible on the court. At home the serving gave us a big hand against Itas, but we must be focused in every aspect and work well in all the fundamentals to be able to fight and win with the block, the attack and the defense.” Giovanni Gargiulo, middle blocker of Cucine Lube Civitanova
Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza v Sir Susa Vim Perugia

Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza will host the second match of the best-of-three third-place playoff against last season’s champions Sir Susa Vim Perugia at the Banca Sport hall in Piacenza on Saturday, May 3, at 20:30 (18:30), with the bronze medals and a ticket to next season’s CEV Champions League at stake in the series.

Sir took the lead in the series on Tuesday, when they produced a 3-1 (37-35, 25-18, 19-25, 25-18) home victory over Gas Sales. It was the fourth time the team from Perugia beat their opponents from Piacenza this season. At the start of the season, Sir defeated Gas Sales in a four-set Supercoppa Italiana semifinal. They also won the two regular season fixtures – 3-2 at home and 3-1 away. The all-time head-to-head record between the two clubs stands at 14-2 Sir’s way.

“In game two, we will certainly have to express ourselves better to try to put our opponents in greater difficulty. I have to improve, especially in serving. I have to show up calmer at the nine-meter line to help the team. Both for us and for Perugia, it is a difficult moment after the setbacks in the semifinals.” Robertlandy Simon, middle blocker of Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza
“We need to take another ‘little step’. We know we are facing a team with very specific characteristics, a team with great potential in serving, and we understand that we must maintain good reception. I expect another complicated, difficult match, because the Champions League is a goal for everyone. It's an important goal. So we will have to avoid lapses in concentration, because whether we are ahead or behind, it will remain a very difficult, tense match, as it should be.” Massimo Colaci, libero of Sir Susa Vim Perugia
Fifth-place playoff semifinals

Also on Saturday, starting at 17:30 (15:30), the two single-match semifinals of the fifth-place playoffs will take place, with the two winners advancing to a deciding duel for a ticket to Europe’s CEV Challenge Cup next season.

In one of the matches, last year’s bronze medalists Allianz Milan, who finished the regular season in sixth place and then finished runners-up in the round-robin stage of the fifth-place playoffs, will host Rana Verona, who took fourth place in the regular season and third place in the fifth-place round robin.

In the other, Valsa Group Modena, who emerged on top of the six-team table in the league phase of these playoffs, after taking seventh place in the regular season, will entertain Sonepar Padova Padua, who finished fourth and ninth in the two sets of standings, respectively.
