The Italian SuperLega Credem Banca men’s volleyball season is set to resume midweek with the matches of the third leg – five on Wednesday and one on Thursday, all starting at 20:30 local time (19:30 UTC) – undoubtedly highlighted by the big game between Cucine Lube Civitanova and Itas Trentino Trento, a remake of last season’s championship final.

Cucine Lube Civitanova will take on Itas Trentino Trento on Wednesday, October 29, at the Eurosuole Forum in Civitanova Marche. Last season’s silver medalists Lube just came out the losing end of another huge clash at bronze medalists Sir Susa Scai Perugia after a five-set battle on Sunday and occupy sixth place in the current standings on 4 points and a 1-1 win-loss record. Meanwhile, the champions from Trento have been impeccable in the defense of their title so far and have not lost a set in the first two legs, leading the table on 6 and 2-0. Last season, Lube and Trentino met as many as eight times across all competitions. Trentino won five of those encounters, including three of the four in the final playoff for the SuperLega crown. Lube are still ahead in the all-time head-to-head series, by 57-50 in wins.

“The schedule isn't helping us because, after the marathon in Perugia, a night that felt like we were playing two games in one, we'll be hosting a tough rival in Itas Trentino midweek. Time is tight, but we're regaining our energy, and against the Italian champions, we'll try to play another important match for our growth!” Mattia Bottolo, outside hitter of Cucine Lube Civitanova
“Now we have two very demanding away games in four days, where we'll definitely need to raise our game. I'm curious to see how we'll stack up against Civitanova and Verona, who are also just starting out. I can't wait to get on the court because we train every day for events like these. I never start a season with specific expectations, but I'm sure we'll have fun.” Riccardo Sbertoli, setter and captain of Itas Trentino Trento

Another big game is coming up on Thursday evening. Undefeated Rana Verona will welcome Allianz Milan to the Agsm AIM hall, looking to extend their excellent start to the season, which placed them second in the table on 6 and 2-0, and only a set lost in two matches played. On 2 and 1-1, Allianz occupy eighth place.

Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza will host Valsa Group Modena in another high-profile meeting on Wednesday at the Banca hall. Gas Sales stand seventh on 3 and 1-1, while Modena are two spots above them, in fifth place on 4 and 1-1.

Third-placed Sir Susa Scai Perugia, on 5 and 2-0, will entertain ninth-placed Sonepar Padova Padua, on 2 and 1-1, at the Barton Energy hall, also on Wednesday evening.

At the same time, SuperLega rookies MA Acqua San Bernardo Cuneo, who have made a really good start to their first season in Italy’s top division, will now visit Vero Volley Monza at the OpiquadArena. Cuneo are running fourth in the table on 4 and 1-1, while Vero Volley are still winless, standing second from the bottom, in 10th place on 0 and 0-2.

The other two teams that are still winless and trail bottom on 0 and 0-2 each – Cisterna Volley and Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina – will meet head to head on Wednesday in a duel for their first win of the season. 12th-placed Cisterna will play host to 11th-placed Grottazzolina.
