Who will win the regular season? Who will book the last vacancy in the quarterfinal playoffs? Who will be relegated? All these questions could potentially find their answers this upcoming weekend, as the six matches of the 20th leg in the Italian men’s volleyball SuperLega Credem Banca unfold on Saturday and Sunday, February 14 and 15.

Starting from the top of the current standings, table leaders Sir Susa Scai Perugia may secure the first place in the regular season and pole position for the playoffs. They stand five points clear of second-placed Rana Verona, topping the chart on 50 points and a 17-2 win-loss record. Last week’s winners of the Italy Cup trophy occupy the runner-up position on 45 and 16-3. With another two legs to go to the end of the regular season, should that gap widen to at least seven points this weekend, it can no longer be closed.

Both teams have strong opponents, among the top seven in the table, who have already secured their advancement to the playoffs. Sir Susa Scai Perugia will host Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza, who are in fifth place on 39 and 12-7, while Rana Verona will travel to Allianz Milan, seventh on 29 and 10-9. The two matches at the Barton Energy hall in Perugia and at the Allianz Cloud in Milan, respectively, will serve off at 18:00 local time (17:00 UTC) on Sunday, closing the competition weekend. November’s encounter between Gas Sales and Sir in Piacenza went to five sets, before the visitors could celebrate victory. Verona, on the other hand, swept both their home games against Allianz this season – in the SuperLega and in Coppa Italia – in straight sets.

In one of the leg’s two opening matches on Saturday at 18:00 (17:00), Vero Volley Monza will welcome one of their immediate rivals for the remaining playoff ticket – Sonepar Padova Padua – to the Opiquad Arena. Currently, Vero Volley are within the playoff zone, in eighth place on 19 and 6-13, while Padova are just below it, in ninth place on 15 and 6-13. So, if the squad from Monza wins the full three points from this match, like they did when they visited Padua in December, Padova will be out of contention.

However, there is one more candidate for the eighth place in the final regular season standings and that’s SuperLega rookies MA Acqua San Bernardo Cuneo. They are in 10th place on 14 and 4-15, five points behind Vero Volley, but if that difference also increases to at least seven points by the end of the weekend, then the Monza team can celebrate as a quarterfinalist. Cuneo will play on the road this weekend. On Sunday at 17:00 (16:00), they will take on Cisterna Volley, running second from the bottom, in 11th place on 11 and 4-15. In their first encounter in October, Cuneo claimed a straight-set home win.

Meanwhile, both of these teams are still mathematically threatened by relegation, Cisterna more so than Cuneo. The main candidates for a southbound ticket to Serie A2, however, are Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina, trailing bottom in 12th place on 5 and 1-18. If they don’t take at least a point from their visit to defending champions Itas Trentino Trento, they will definitely lose their place in the SuperLega for next season. Trentino stand in third place on 42 and 14-5. The game at the BTS Arena is also on Sunday at 17:00 (16:00). December’s match between the two sides in Grottazzolina went 3-0 Trentino’s way.

In the other opening match on Saturday at 18:00 (17:00), last year’s silver medalists Cucine Lube Civitanova will entertain Valsa Group Modena at the Eurosuole Forum. The result of that duel is relevant for the positions the two teams will eventually take in the playoff bracket. Lube are currently in sixth place on 34 and 11-8, while Modena are fourth on 39 and 13-6. In December, Modena beat Lube at home in four sets.
