Verona v Gas Sales (source: legavolley.it)

Although the first match of the 12th leg in the Italian men’s volleyball SuperLega Credem Banca, between FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship participant Sir Susa Scai Perugia and Vero Volley Monza, was played in advance back in November, the proper second half of the regular season gets underway this weekend, starting with Saturday’s big game between Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza and Rana Verona, and completing the leg with the remaining four matches on Sunday.

The weekend’s opening fixture will offer a clash between the fourth and the third in the current standings. Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza, currently on 22 points and a 7-4 win-loss record, will host Rana Verona, on 26 and 9-2, at the Banca Sport hall on Saturday, December 20, at 18:00 local time (17:00 UTC). Even if they take the three points from this home match, Gas Sales will not be able to overtake their opponents in the table, but will at least manage to get very close to the top three, to within a point.

When Verona hosted the team from Piacenza in the season’s opening leg in October, they celebrated a 3-1 victory. Last season the two clubs met as many as six times between the league and the national cup. Verona won the first three encounters, while Gas Sales emerged victorious from the next three to win the best-of-five quarterfinal series and advance to the semis. The all-time head-to-head record between the two clubs stands at 14-8 in favor of Gas Sales.

“It'll be a very tough match against Verona. We're facing a team that performed very well in the first half of the season, and we remember how they did in the first leg. But we have improved since then, and this time we'll be playing in front of our home crowd, who could be the extra player for us. Our goal is to continue to grow and work hard in the gym.” Domenico Pace, libero of Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza
“We're facing a great team with the same ambitions as us, aiming to compete with the big teams, and we're both succeeding. I expect a tough match, because they play differently at home, with greater efficiency in various key areas, and one of the league's best receptions. We need to show that we're growing not only technically, but emotionally as well.” Fabio Soli, head coach of Rana Verona

Sunday’s program will open at 17:00 (16:00), with MA Acqua San Bernardo Cuneo entertaining Cucine Lube Civitanova in the first match. The SuperLega rookies stand third from the bottom of the table, in 10th place on 9 and 2-9, while Lube are in sixth place on 19 and 6-5. When they met in the first half of the regular season, Lube hammered out a convincing shutout at home.

Sonepar Padova Padua will welcome defending champions Itas Trentino Trento to the Kioene Arena on Sunday at 18:00 (17:00) in an attempt to get back at the mighty opponent for the straight-set loss they suffered in October’s match in Trento. Padova are currently located just below the playoff zone in the table, in ninth place on 11 and 4-7, while Trentino are running second on 26 and 9-2, and a better set ratio than Verona. A three-point win in Padua will propel the champions to the top of the standings, above Sir, who are battling for the club world cup title in Brazil this weekend.

At the same time on Sunday evening, Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina will host Allianz Milan at the Savelli hall in an effort to score their first win of the season. They trail bottom in 12th place on 2 and 0-11, under a serious threat of relegation. Allianz are in seventh place on 17 and 6-5. When the two teams met in Milan in November, Allianz produced an emphatic shutout.

In the weekend’s closing match, Valsa Group Modena will entertain Cisterna Volley at the Panini hall on Sunday at 19:00 (18:00). Modena are in fifth place on 22 and 7-4, while Cisterna are second from the bottom, in 11th place on 6 and 3-8. November’s game between the two squads produced a five-set battle, which went the way of the hosts from Cisterna.
