Modena’s players celebrate during their home match against Trentino

With six aces from Austrian opposite Paul Buchegger, Valsa Group Modena upset defending champions Itas Trentino Trento in one of the five Italian men’s volleyball SuperLega Credem Banca matches of the 16th leg, played on Wednesday, January 14. Modena beat their visitors in four sets and narrowed the distance to them in the current standings to only two points. The other four matches were resolved in straight sets and did not bring in any other upsets.

In addition to acing away from the serving line, Buchegger scored 11 spike kills at a 50% success rate in attack, and one kill block towards a match-high 18 points in Valsa Group Modena’s 3-1 (25-17, 19-25, 25-21, 25-21) home victory over Itas Trentino Trento, handing the defending champions their second consecutive defeat after a long winning streak of 13 games in a row across all competitions. 21-year-old outside hitter Luca Porro fired another three aces for Modena to finish with 15 points and claim the Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors. His 21-year-old Brazilian cross-court teammate Arthur Bento, who entered as a substitution during the third set, also reached the double digits with 10 points, all in swings. French opposite Theo Faure was Trentino’s most prolific scorer with 17 points, including two aces. Outside hitters Alessandro Michieletto and Spain’s Jordi Ramon added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Modena improved to 34 points and an 11-5 win-loss record in fourth place, while Trentino are in third on 36 and 12-4.

“A great and very important win, good for our standings and our morale!” Luca Porro said after the match. “We are keeping our feet on the ground. There are still many games to play. On an individual level, I'm continuing my growth, working to be increasingly consistent in my performances. We shouldn't focus too much on the standings. We're taking one game at a time.”

Table leaders Sir Susa Scai Perugia achieved a hard-fought 3-0 (29-27, 25-23, 25-22) away win over SuperLega rookies MA Acqua San Bernardo Cuneo. Tunisian opposite Wassim Ben Tara led the winners with 15 points, including two blocks and an ace, while his French counterpart Nathan Feral topped the match charts with 20 points for Cuneo, including one ace and one block. The reigning club world and European champions top the standings on 41 and 14-2, while Cuneo remain just below the cut-off for the playoffs, in ninth place on 12 and 3-13.

Rana Verona hammered out a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-23) home victory over Sonepar Padova Padua to stay close behind the Block Devils in the table, in second place on 39 and 14-2. Padova occupy 10th place on 11 and 4-12. Swinging at a 61% success rate and raising three kill blocks, Slovenian outside hitter Rok Mozic emerged as the best scorer of the match with a total of 17 points.

In the leg opener, Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza produced a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-17) shutout of their hosts Allianz Milan with a match-high 16 points, including two blocks and an ace, from Cuban outside Jose Gutierrez. The winners improved to 32 and 10-6 in fifth place. Allianz stand comfortably in seventh on 26 and 9-7, quite far from any neighbors in both directions.

Cucine Lube Civitanova are above them, in sixth place on 31 and 10-6, after a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-17) sweep of their game at bottom-placed Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina. Bulgarian outside Aleksandar Nikolov led the way with an impressive six aces and 12 successful swings towards a match-high 18 points. Grottazzolina remain stuck in 12th place on 4 and 1-15.

The last match of the leg, between 11th-placed Cisterna Volley and eighth-placed Vero Volley Monza, will be played on Thursday, January 15, serving off at 20:30 local time (19:30 UTC). The 17th leg will follow on Saturday and Sunday, January 17 and 18.
