Brazil (BRA) vs. Serbia (SRB) men - Pool H #59679311

Outside hitter Pavle Perić scored 15 points for Serbia in their sweep of Brazil

The last day of pool play matches at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship started with a big turnaround, as Serbia secured a spot in the tournament's Round of 16 after starting their campaign with a defeat, while Brazil, which seemed on pace to qualify after winning their first two encounters, are now at risk of failing to break pool.

The scenario changed drastically after the Europeans upset the South Americans at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, in Pasay City, on Thursday, winning 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-22) in the last day of matches in Pool H.

Serbia's second-straight victory in Pasay City got the team up to six points in the Pool H standings and confirmed their presence in the Round of 16. For Brazil, the defeat had the opposite effect, as if the South Americans seemed very close to advancing two days ago after securing their second victory in the tournament, they now need to wait for the outcome of the match between Czechia and China later on Thursday to know their fate.

Brazil completed their pool play campaign with six points, two wins, six sets won and four lost. Czechia have three points, one win, three sets won and three lost, and need to beat China 3-0 to finish higher than Brazil in the set ratio tie-breaker. If they win 3-1, the decision goes to points ratio. If they win 3-2 or lose, Brazil advance.

Opposite Dražen Luburić was pivotal in the Serbian victory, leading the team's offense with 19 points (17 kills, two aces). Outside hitter Pavle Perić also had a productive performance, contributing 15 points (13 kills, one block, one ace).

"Brazil are an amazing team and it has been a little while since we last beat them," setter Nikola Jovović said. "Maybe today they didn't play their best, and we had an amazing game. We were able to show a lot of emotions and great volleyball, and I'm very happy and proud of the team. We want to continue playing this way."

Brazil had opposite Alan de Souza as their leading scorer with 10 points (nine kills, one block). He had one more point than middle blocker Judson Nunes, who registered seven kills and two blocks.

"We had the same energy as last match, but Serbia played a great match today," outside hitter Ricardo Lucarelli said. "They were doing a great job of getting out of tough situations, and we kept trying, but that got us frustrated. I think we played a good match, but everything we did, they did better. Luburić and Perić both had great performances today, and we just couldn't stop them. We're sad because we wanted to win again and to play well, but now all we can do is wait for the result of the other match."

Serbia's dominant performance showed in the stats, as the Europeans produced more points than Brazil in kills (43 to 40), blocks (ten to six), aces (four to two) and opponent errors (18 to 16).
