Ukraine’s Dmytro Yanchuk powers through the Algerian block at the Men’s Volleyball World Championship

Ukraine scored their first win at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in the Philippines. In a Pool F fixture in Quezon City on Tuesday, they hammered out an emphatic shutout of Algeria, leaving the opponent at the bottom of the pool standings without a set won. The European team is currently third on a 1-1 win-loss record and 3 points, still with a shot at the eighthfinal spots.

In a one-sided match without suspense, Ukraine mastered a 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-11) sweep to keep their hopes of advancement in the tournament alive.

They dominated on the court throughout the match and outperformed Algeria on all scoring counts – 39-20 in spike kills, 9-3 in aces, 13-7 in kill blocks and 10-14 in unforced errors. Outside hitter Dmytro Yanchuk led the way with three aces, two kill blocks and a 57% success rate in attack towards a match-high 18 points. Opposite Vasyl Tupchii put away two aces and two kill blocks and spiked at a 53% success rate to finish with 12 points, while middle blocker and captain Yurii Semeniuk impressed with a 70% success rate in offense to reach the double digits with 11 points, including three blocks and an ace. Meanwhile, outside Sidi Mohamed Dour was Algeria’s leading scorer with nine points, including three blocks and two aces.

“Of course, we are happy to have won this game. After the last game against Belgium, it was important for our mentality and our confidence towards the next game and towards continuing to fight for the playoffs,” Ukraine’s Yevhenii Kisiliuk told VBTV. “The next game is really tough for us, a game for life! We played against Italy in the Volleyball Nations League and fought five sets, so we will keep the same level and try to win this game and go to the playoffs.”
