Canada (CAN) vs. Libya (LBA) men - Pool G #58944457

Vernon-Evans played some beach volleyball tournaments in 2023 before coming back to the Canadian national team

Playing his first match with the Canadian national team since the Tokyo Olympics, four years ago, opposite Sharone Vernon-Evans made a difference and helped the North Americans avoid what would have been a massive upset and start their campaign at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship on the right foot on Saturday.

The Canadians faced Libya, who are back at the World Championship after 45 years, in their first match at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, in Pasay City, the Philippines, and recovered from an unexpected first-set loss to triumph 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-12, 29-27) in the Pool G opening match.

Despite the first-set loss, the Canadians still took all three points with their four-set victory, while the Libyans didn't earn any. Two more rounds of matches will take place over the next few days, and the best two teams in each pool will make it to the Round of 16.

A key piece in the Canadian national team between 2017 and 2021, the 27-year-old Vernon-Evans made a quick switch to beach volleyball and appeared in a pair of Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour events in the 2023 season. In his return to international volleyball competition, the opposite picked up where he left off and was the match's top scorer with 22 points (16 kills, three blocks, three aces).

Canadian captain and outside hitter Nicholas Hoag, who is back with the team after not competing on the Volleyball Nations League this year, also had a tremendous performance, tallying 20 points (15 kills, four aces, one block). Middle blockers Fynn McCarthy and Daenan Gyimah added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

"I think everybody was a little bit nervous in the first set," Hoag said. "Libya play very aggressively, and if they can pass well, they're very difficult to stop. I'm glad we got the win, but we'll need to play better if we want to beat Japan in our next match. They're a great team, and we can't give them anything. We'll need to be very disciplined with our blocking, too."

The Ikhbayri brothers Ahmed and Mohamed carried the Libyan offense, with each of them scoring 17 points. The opposite had 15 kills, one block and one ace, while the outside hitter registered 16 kills and one ace.

"We are super happy," Ahmed reacted. "The result may not have been what we wanted, but we are happy with how we played. We are returning to the World Championship after over 40 years, so this is a good result, even if we didn't win. The next match will be tough too, just like this one. We'll try to keep the same mindset and fight for every point. We want to make our fans at home proud, and we know we have much more to show here."

Serving was the main difference between the teams as Canada fired 15 aces to Libya's three. The North Americans had slim edges in kills (51 to 49) and blocks (12 to nine) and each team gave away 23 points in errors.
