Entering the game as the number 17 team in the FIVB World Ranking, Belgium mastered a solid 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-22) shutout of their opponents, ranked 14th in the world. 14.74 ranking points were moved from Ukraine’s bucket to Belgium’s, so the eastern European team dropped to number 16, while the western European squad remained right below them, in number 17, less than 3 points behind.
Belgium completely outplayed Ukraine in all scoring counts – 40-31 in spike kills, 10-5 in kill blocks, 6-4 in aces and 15-19 in unforced errors. Outside hitter Seppe Rotty authored five of those six aces and finished with a total of 13 points. 22-year-old star opposite Ferre Reggers led the way with a match-high 23 points. He raised three kill blocks and spiked at a 56% success rate. The other outside, team captain Sam Deroo, chipped in with another 12 points towards the Red Dragons’ success. Opposite Vasyl Tupchii was Ukraine’s only player to reach the double digits with 14 points to his name.
“We worked the whole summer for this game. That’s the first statement I will make. We pointed out from the start that this would be our key game and it is such a beautiful thing that we did it with these guys. To do it in this way against a team that had an incredible summer proves that we are here to stay,” Ferre Reggers told VBTV. “I did not expect so many fans. It’s incredible to have this atmosphere so far away from our country. Keep supporting us, because we are not done yet!
In the pool’s second match, Algeria will challenge defending champions Italy at 21:30 local time (13:30 UTC) in Quezon City.
