Reigning champions Italy took a solid first step to defend the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship title they won in 2022 on Sunday by winning their first match in this year's edition of the tournament in a convincing way in the Philippines.

The defending champions were faced with Algeria in their first match at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City and started their Pool F campaign with a strong 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-17) victory.

The other match of the day in Pool F had Belgium sweeping continental rivals Ukraine 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-22) in the teams' debut. With that, Italians and Belgians share the top of the standings, with three points each. The two best teams in the pool will make it to the Round of 16.

Italy's outside hitters carried the team's offense in their debut, with Alessandro Michieletto producing a match-high 15 points (nine kills, four aces, two blocks) and Mattia Bottolo following with 13 (11 kills, two aces). Opposite Yuri Romanò also got to double digits, registering 11 points with ten kills and one ace.

"Every team at the World Championship is very good," Michieletto said. "We've been watching some really beautiful matches, and the level is very high. Our pool is very strong, and our path to the final should be very difficult, but we have a strong team and will do our best. We need to keep our focus because a few plays can change any match here."

Back at the World Championship for the first time since 1998, Algeria had outside hitter Sidi Dour leading the team against the world champions with 11 points (ten kills, one block), while opposite Boudjemaa Ikken tallied ten, with eight kills and two blocks.

"We are coming back to this stage after a long time," outside hitter and team captain Soufiane Hosni reflected. "We came here today to do our best, and I wanted to thank all my teammates for working hard. I'm sure we can do better than what we did today. We were a little bit shy to bring our best, but we'll try to show more in our next match."

Italy's smooth victory was reflected in the stats, as the Europeans outscored their opponents in kills (39 to 32), blocks (eight to three) and aces (seven to zero), besides making fewer errors (17 to 21).
