Germany outplayed Chile on all scoring counts to earn a convincing 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-21) victory. It was the 50-41 advantage in spike kills that made the greatest difference in the match.
Germany’s 40-year-old star opposite and captain Gyorgy Grozer led the way with a match-high 19 points. He spiked at a 63% success rate and put away one ace and one kill block towards the victory. Outside hitter Erik Rohrs was the one, who brought in match point with a swing and converted it with a kill block to finish with 13 points. Middle blocker Anton Brehme impressed with a 73% success rate in attack and reached the double digits with 10 points.
“It was a difficult game for us. We were upset after the loss against Bulgaria. I think it was a tough game, but maybe we could have done something more there… So, it was important for us to step up again and make one step ahead. And now we are looking forward to our first small final,” Germany’s setter Jan Zimmermann told VBTV. “We were trying to alternate (in attack) a little bit. I think it was important that George had a good game. He is always important for us. The important thing was to win this game, and 3-0 is I think more than what we were looking for.”
Opposite Vicente Parraguirre was Chile’s most prolific scorer. He delivered 14 points, all in swings at a solid success rate of 64%. Spiking at 56%, outside hitter Noe Aravena also reached the double digits, with 11 points, including one ace and one kill block.
The two winning teams in the first leg of Pool E action – Slovenia and Bulgaria – are set to lock horns next in Pasay City, at 17:30 local time (09:30 UTC).
