Launched in 1949, the oldest competition on the international calendar will return from August 26 through September 11. It will be the second time it is hosted by two nations, after Italy and Bulgaria jointly organised the previous edition in 2018.
The five continental confederations will be represented as battles for planetary honours begin on August 26. With Australia the only exception, 15 of the 16 teams that competed in the VNL will also participate in Poland-Slovenia 2022. That includes five teams which have previously won the World Championship – Brazil (three times), Germany (once), Italy (three times), the United States (once) and defending titleholders Poland (three times). Other teams to look out for are Argentina, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Iran, Japan, the Netherlands, Serbia, Slovenia and reigning Olympic champions France. They will be joined by another nine teams who did not participate in this year's VNL, namely Cameroon, Cuba, Egypt, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Tunisia, Türkiye and Ukraine.
The teams set to participate in the Men's World Championship are split into six round-robin pools of four. Two of the pools will be played in Katowice, Poland and the other four in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana. All pool winners, all pool runners-up and the best four of the six third-placed teams will qualify for the knockout stage of the World Championship, starting with the Round of 16.
Ljubljana will welcome four of the matches in the Round of 16 and two quarterfinals. As will the Polish city of Gliwice. The last four teams standing will meet in Katowice for the semifinals on September 10 and the medal showdown on September 11.
There will be much to look forward to at the Men's World Championship, including the highest level of international volleyball, passionate fans and host cities buzzing with energy. Tickets for the matches in Slovenia can already be purchased and are available here.
