At the start of Poland-Slovenia 2022, the Italians were sixth in the ranking with 332 points, but seven victories and a World Championship title later, they now occupy spot number two on 369 points, 20 short of leaders Poland, who netted a total of four points over the duration of the tournament. Italy’s 3-1 victory over the reigning world champions in the gold medal match in Katowice brought in 11 points, which was enough to leave both France and Brazil behind.
Olympic and Volleyball Nations League champions France, who were second at the start of the World Championship, lost five points during the tournament and dropped to third, one point below Italy, who knocked them out in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, World Championship bronze medallists Brazil added 20 points to their total (361), enough to occupy fourth position. Russia dropped to fifth on 352.
The top 10 in the World Ranking is completed by USA, Japan, Argentina, Slovenia and Iran.
The only team that made a higher jump than Italy at the tournament was Ukraine. They recorded three wins and two defeats in the competition and netted 27 World Ranking points. Their stunning straight-set victory over the Netherlands in the Round of 16 alone brought in 15 points. Ukraine’s new total of 187 points placed them in position 16, eight spots higher than the 24th place they held some 20 days ago.
Three other teams improved their rankings thanks to their results at the World Championship. Türkiye climbed three positions up to number 14, Japan jumped two spots to number seven and Slovenia moved up from tenth to ninth.
China and Puerto Rico, who failed to win any of their pool matches at Poland-Slovenia 2022, suffered the biggest drops of seven spots each. The Asian team descended from 19th to 26th and the squad from the Caribbean fell from 22nd to 29th.
