SMI Roma Volley secured what could be a critical victory in their fight to avoid relegation in the 2024-2025 Lega Volley Femminile Serie A1 Tigotà on Sunday, during the eighth leg of the second round of the regular season.

Facing a direct opponent in Il Bisonte Firenze, the team from the Italian capital stepped up to produce a 3-1 (25-14, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22) victory, taking home all three points and improving their situation in the standings.

Roma started the weekend in 13th place, inside the relegation zone, but their triumph made them switch positions with Firenze, going up to 12th – Roma now have 16 points (five wins, 16 losses), one more than Firenze, who have the same campaign.

Czech opposite Gabriela Orvošová was huge for Roma in their match against Firenze, leaving the court with an impressive 32 points (30 kills, two aces). Outside hitters Wilma Salas and Giulia Melli produced 12 and ten, respectively.

“We’re very happy, but not only because this victory makes a big impact for us in the standings,” Orvošová said. “We did some great teamwork today to get it and we’ll continue to give everything we have until the end of the season.”

Firenze had opposite Adhuoljok Malual, with 21 points (18 kills, three aces), and Belarusian outside hitter Hanna Davyskiba, with 17 (15 kills, one block, one ace), as their leading scorers.

In another match involving two teams that fight against relegation, Honda Olivero Cuneo made good use of their homecourt advantage on Sunday to overcome Bartoccini-MC Restauri Perugia 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 25-22). They are now tenth, with 19 points (six wins, 15 losses), three more than their opponents, who rank 11th.

Currently at the bottom of the standings in 14th place with 13 points (three wins, 18 losses), Cda Volley Talmassongs Fvg couldn’t help their cause this weekend as they lost to Numia Vero Volley Milano 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-10) on Saturday.

Vallefoglia sweep Scandicci on the road

In the upper half of the standings, the most impactful result of the weekend was Megabox Ondulati Savio Vallefoglia’s surprising 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22) road win over Savino Del Bene Scandicci on Sunday.

The result kept Vallefoglia in eighth place, now with 32 points (ten wins, 11 losses), but had a negative impact on Scandicci, who continued with 48 points (16 wins, five losses) and were passed by Milano, who now have 50 (17 wins, four losses).

Defending champions and league leaders Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano extended their undefeated campaign to 21 matches and got to 63 points with their 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-14) road win over Wash4Green Pinerolo on Sunday.

Saturday had two other matches, with Igor Gorgonzola Novara topping Eurotek Uyba Busto Arsizio 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-18) and Reale Mutua Fenera Chieri ’76 beating Bergamo also 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-23).

Next weekend will be reserved for the Coppa Italia Finals, which will have Conegliano, Novara, Milano and Scandicci fighting for the title in Bologna between Saturday and Sunday.

The Italian League will return for the ninth leg of the second round in the middle of the following week, with one match on Tuesday and six on Wednesday.
