Both teams had promising debuts in the Italian League and showed signs that they could be on pace for strong campaigns in 2024-2025. Milano, who topped Wash4Green Pinerolo on the road, had to do it without star opposite Paola Egonu, who will need to have nasal surgery and will be sidelined for some weeks.
The team, which took silver in the Supercoppa Italiana, had outside hitters Nika Daalderop and Miriam Sylla stepping up to take the team to win in Pinerolo. This week, they will also have their fans to push them, playing at home for the first time in the season.
“We can’t wait to feel the energy of our fans for the first time this season,” said head coach Stefano Lavarini. “We will face a team that was one of the surprises of last season and that earned a spot in European competitions. The match against Pinerolo showed us some areas where we need to improve and we worked on them this week, but we’ll need the same character we showed in our opening match.”
After making it to the playoffs in just their second season in the Italian elite, Roma counted on 27 points by Czech opposite Gabriela Orvošová to beat Cda Volley Talmassons Fvg at home in their opening match in 2024-2025.
On Wednesday, Roma made history, beating Croatian side Kelteks Karlovac in the CEV Challenge Cup to celebrate the club’s first-ever victory in a European tournament.
“We’ll play one of the strongest teams in the league, but we also have great qualities,” Serbian setter Slađana Mirković reacted. “In order to get a result, we’ll need to not only play our best volleyball, but also make our best effort on the court. We started the season winning the WEVZA Cup, followed up with victories at both the Italian League and the Challenge Cup and want to continue growing.”
Six matches on Sunday
The duel between Milano and Roma will be the only one held on Saturday as the six remaining matches of the Lega Femminile’s second leg will be played on Sunday, starting with Igor Gorgonzola Novara vs. Pinerolo, at 16:30 local time (14:30 GMT).
