Lega Volley Femminile Serie A1 Tigotà leaders Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano gave a massive step towards ending the regular season in first place on Saturday, when they secured their 18th victory in the tournament.

The reigning world champions went on the road against second-placed Savino Del Bene Scandicci in what was supposed to be their toughest match in the regular season and prevailed with an impressive 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-13) scoreline to claim their 18th victory and 14th sweep in the season.

The triumph over their closest chasers in the sixth leg of the second round gave Conegliano a nine-point lead (54 to 45) over Scandicci, paving the way for them to head into the playoffs as the top-seeded team. Their situation is even more comfortable because they played only 18 matches so far, while Scandicci have played 19 and have only seven more in their schedule before the end of the regular season.

Conegliano’s ‘ Big Three’ of outside hitters Zhu Ting and Gabriela ‘Gabi’ Guimarães and opposite Isabella Haak stepped up for them against Scandicci, combining for 49 points. The Chinese superstar led the way with 17 points (13 kills, three blocks, one ace), while the Brazilian national team captain, who took home the MVP award, and the Swedish scoring machine tallied 16 each.

“We wanted very much to show our game against a strong rival like Scandicci on the road and that resulted in this great victory,” Gabi reacted. “I think that we didn’t play our best in the first set, especially with blocking and defense, but after that, we were able to perform in the way we wanted. We’re having a great season but we want to keep improving.”

Scandicci had two players getting to double digits in scoring in middle blocker Linda Nwakalor (nine kills, one block, one ace) and opposite Ekaterina Antropova (ten kills, one ace), with 11 points each.

“We need to give credit to Conegliano, who clearly play the best volleyball in Italy, in Europe and in the world right now,” head coach Marco Gaspari reflected. “We didn’t start badly, but we should have done a better job with the counterattacks. Also, we only made five serving errors today and that shows we weren’t aggressive enough in trying to make them uncomfortable. You can never win playing them like this.”

Milano win and move to third place

Also on Saturday, Numia Vero Volley Milano topped Bartoccini-MC Restauri Perugia 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-16) and moved up, at least temporarily, to third place with 41 points, passing Igor Gorgonzola Novara, who play Il Bisonte Firenze on Sunday, at 17:00 local time (16:00 GMT).

Serbian middle blocker Hena Kurtagić led Milano’s scoring efforts with a match-high 13 points, including an incredible nine blocks. Star opposite Paola Egonu registered 12 while Hungarian opposite Anett Németh produced seven for Perugia.
