Mazzanti determined to rescue Trentino from the bottom

Just over two months after stepping down from the Italian women’s national team, head coach Davide Mazzanti is involved with another major project in the country as he took over Itas Trentino’s women’s team in the Lega Pallavolo Femminile Serie A Tigotà.

If over the last six years the 47-year-old Mazzanti grew used to fighting for gold medals with the Italian squad around the world, his first task with Trentino will be significantly different as the team is severely threatened by relegation in the Italian elite.

With only three points (one win) earned in 14 matches, Trentino sit at the bottom of the standings in the Italian League and have, at this moment, an eight-point gap to Volley Bergamo 1991, who rank 12^th and are the first team above the line.

The new coach’s plan to get the team out of the uncomfortable situation is to take one step up at a time.

“I have a lot of ideas of what we can do together,” Mazzanti said during his introductory press conference. “Right now, the vision is a little blurred because of where we are in the standings. I told the players that sometimes, when you start to climb a mountain, looking at the peak can be discouraging, so we need to focus on ourselves and take one step at a time. I believe we can do something important here.”

Mazzanti, who has won four Italian League titles with his previous clubs, will have 12 matches to change Trentino’s faith and will lead the team on the court for the first time on January 7, when they go on the road against second-placed Allianz Vero Volley Milano, in what is going to be his first Lega Femminile match since 2017.

“Meeting the players has been very emotional,” he said. “I found a very determined group of players and that touched me. I believe this club has a great vision and where we are now doesn’t change it, what matters is where we want to go."

During his six years with the Italian national team, from 2017 to 2023, Mazzanti led them to victory at the 2022 Volleyball Nations League and the 2021 European Championship, besides having taken silver at the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship.
