Volley Bergamo needed at least a point on the road on Wednesday against Itas Trentino to keep their hopes of avoiding relegation in the 2023-2024 Lega Pallavolo Femminile Serie A Tigotà alive, but instead got all three and improved their situation ahead of the final round of the regular season on Sunday.

Their victory in the postponed match of the tenth leg of the second round held in Trento on Wednesday has put them nearly on equal footing with Honda Olivero S. Bernardo Cuneo, the other team that’s fighting against relegation in Italy.

With the result, Bergamo added three more points to their season total, getting to 18, the same amount of Cuneo. Because they have only five wins to their opponents' seven, Bergamo will need to earn at least one point more than Cuneo in the final leg of the regular season, on Sunday, to avoid relegation – with 11 points, Trentino are already confirmed to go down.

The two teams will play at the same time on Sunday, with both Bergamo’s home match against second-placed Savino Del Bene Scandicci and Cuneo’s road game against tenth-placed Il Bisonte Firenze set to start at 17:00 local time (16:00 GMT). If Cuneo win 3-0 or 3-1, they will be saved regardless of Bergamo's result.

Bergamo were just two sets away from being relegated on Wednesday as they dropped the first set to Trentino before coming back to win the match 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 29-27, 25-19).

Brazilian opposite Lorrayna da Silva and Belarusian outside hitter Hanna Davyskiba were both pivotal for Bergamo’s key victory as each of them contributed 23 points in their triumph – Italian outside hitter Stella Nervini added another 16.

“It was a big battle and securing this victory has given us more confidence,” Davyskiba reflected. “The comeback we had in the third set was huge because it showed us we are capable of playing at a very high level. We need to pick things up from there on Sunday.”

Trentino got 16 points from Italian outside hitter Francesca Michieletto, 13 from American opposite Carly De Hoog and 11 from Russian outside hitter Yana Shcherban.

“We wasted way too many chances to win the match,” said Trentino’s head coach Davide Mazzanti. “It was a match decided by details and we threw it away by making bad decisions. It’s a shame because this was our last home match of the season and we wanted to leave the stadium with a different feeling.”

Decisive matches on Sunday

Following Wednesday’s match, the Italian League regular season will come to an end on Sunday, with all seven matches beginning at 17:00 local time (16:00 GMT). Besides the duel between Bergamo and Cuneo to avoid relegation, there’s also a huge fight to get on the playoffs going on, with three spots still open and Wash4Green Pinerolo, Megabox Ondulati Savio Vallefoglia, Roma Volley Club and Trasportipesanti Casalmaggiore emerging as candidates.
