Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano faced their biggest challenge to date in their attempt to defend their Lega Pallavolo Femminile Serie A Tigotà title, but survived a massive scare to remain undefeated and clear at the top of the standings.

The defending champions trailed twice and were pushed to five sets for just the second time in the season, but delivered when it mattered to secure their 16th victory in the season and improve their points total to 46 on Sunday, against Reale Mutua Fenera Chieri, in Villorba.

Imoco started behind, but showed nerves of steel to come back twice and defeat Chieri 3-2 (26-28, 25-19, 21-25, 30-28, 15-9) and continue as the only undefeated team in the Italian League this season.

Star opposite Isabelle Haak was the most productive player on the court. The 24-year-old Swedish tallied 27 kills and one block to produce a 28-point performance, her third most productive in the current season.

Imoco also counted on strong displays from their American outside hitters as while Kathryn Plummer came up big with 21 points (16 kills, three aces, two blocks), Khalia Lanier contributed another 17, with 15 kills and two aces.

“I’d like to congratulate Chieri,” Imoco’s setter and captain Joanna Wolosz said. “It was the first time we had to play a tie-breaker at home this season and, even if it wasn’t our best performance, I’m proud of the team because we showed a lot of determination to get the result. We’ll need that same spirit in a few weeks, when we’re expected to play some of our tougher matches in the season.”

Belgian opposite Kaja Grobelna led Chieri’s offense with 23 points (18 kills, four aces, one block), followed by Italian outside hitter Loveth Omoruyi, who produced 16, with 14 kills, one block and one ace.

Firenze also win in five

In another five-setter, Il Bisonte Firenze got 26 points from Lina Alsmeier and 21 from Mayu Ishikawa to complete a reverse sweep and overcome Volley Bergamo 1991 3-2 (22-25, 27-29, 25-11, 25-19, 18-16).

Fourth-placed Igor Gorgonzola Novara also won on Sunday. Propelled by 28 points from opposite Vita Akimova, they downed Wash4Green Pinerolo 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-22, 25-14).

Also on Sunday, Megabox Ondulati Savio Vallefoglia topped Honda Olivero S. Bernardo Cuneo 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 16-25, 25-21) and Uyba Volley Busto Arsizio defeated Roma Volley Club 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-23).

The third leg of the second round of the regular season began on Saturday, when Allianz Vero Volley Milano topped Savino Del Bene Scandicci 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-15) on the road and Trasportipesanti Casalmaggiore overcame Itas Trentino 3-2 (26-28, 24-26, 25-18, 25-19, 17-15).

Next weekend’s round of the Italian League with have one match on Saturday and another six on Sunday.
