While most teams competing in the 2023-2024 Lega Pallavolo Femminile Serie A Tigotà have the entire week to prepare for the decisive 13th and final leg of the second round of the regular season on Sunday, Volley Bergamo will have a big battle to fight before that.

Strongly threatened by relegation, the team will go on the road against Itas Trentino on Wednesday, at 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT), in a postponed match of the tenth leg, needing a result to get to the weekend in a position to fight for its permanence in the Italian elite.

Bergamo are currently in 13th place with 15 points (four wins) and will go down if they can’t move one spot up by Sunday. They are three points behind 12th-placed Honda Olivero S. Bernardo Cuneo (18 points, seven wins) and still have two matches to play against just one of their opponents.

Leveling Cuneo in points, however, won’t be enough for Bergamo as they would still be behind in wins, so the team from Northern Italy needs to collect at least four points in their remaining two matches to have a chance of saving their season.

Beating Trentino, who rank 14th (11 points, three wins) and are already officially relegated, would be a big step for Bergamo on Wednesday, but getting one point in the match, which would be possible with a 3-2 loss, would already be enough to keep them alive for the weekend leg.

Bergamo, who got one of their four wins in the season against Trentino, in December, have dropped each of their last seven matches, getting no points at all since a victory over Cuneo on January 21.

“We have had too many ups and downs during the season and we haven’t been able to react in difficult moments,” said Bergamo’s head coach Alberto Bigarelli. “Unfortunately we haven’t been able to change this during the season, but we need to do more in these final two matches.”

Although they have nothing to play for, Trentino have been performing better after their battle to avoid relegation ended, getting two wins in their last five matches, including a 3-1 triumph against Uyba Volley Busto Arsizio last Saturday.

“Last weekend we showed great ability to adapt to some tactical changes," Trentino's coach Davide Mazzanti reflected. "For Wednesday, we expect to do a little bit better technically in some areas of the game so we can take full advantage of the opportunities we get. It's going to be our last home match of the season and we want to give our fans a win to, at least partially, reward them for their support."

If they get the point they need, Bergamo will play their last cards at home against Savino Del Bene Scandicci on Sunday, while Cuneo go on the road against Il Bisonte Firenze.

Decisive matches on Sunday

Following Wednesday’s match, the Italian League regular season will come to an end on Sunday, with all seven matches beginning at 17:00 local time (16:00 GMT). Besides the duel between Bergamo and Cuneo to avoid relegation, there’s also a huge fight to get on the playoffs going on, with three spots still open and Wash4Green Pinerolo, Megabox Ondulati Savio Vallefoglia, Roma Volley Club and Trasportipesanti Casalmaggiore emerging as candidates.
