Isabelle Haak named among Sweden’s Women of the Year

Isabelle Haak, the Most Valuable Player of the last two editions of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship, was named among Sweden’s 100 Women of the Year. It was the second consecutive time the 23-year-old opposite of the Swedish national team and Italy’s Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano entered the Expressen evening newspaper’s list of outstanding female role models, published on International Women’s Day, March 8.

Haak is widely considered one of the world’s best players, part of the Generation O of several top-calibre female opposites born in the last years of the 20th century like Serbia’s Tijana Boskovic, Italy’s Paola Egonu, Turkiye’s Ebrar Karakurt and Poland’s Magdalena Stysiak that currently dominate the world of women’s volleyball.

After winning the 2021 Club World Championship and the MVP award with her Turkish club VakifBank Istanbul, the 1.96m-tall striker led her team to an amazing golden quintuple, also including the 2022 CEV Champions League crown and all three domestic trophies in Turkiye. In 2022, she also won the European Silver League title with Sweden. In September, she was named Europe’s Female Volleyball Player of the Year by the CEV.

In 2022, Haak transferred from VakifBank to their international archrivals Imoco and in December 2022 went on to win the Club World Championship and the MVP award again, but with her new Italian team. Well on her way to repeating her amazing success from the previous season, Haak and her teammates have already won Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana, progressed to the Champions League quarterfinals without losing a single game so far, and qualified for the playoffs in Italy’s Lega Pallavolo Serie A1 Femminile as convincing regular season leaders on a 20-1 win-loss record. The Swedish star has been Imoco’s leading scorer in all competitions.

She was named in position 64 in Expressen’s list of Sweden’s 100 Women of the Year and the newspaper justified its decision as follows:

“Isabelle Haak may not be well known in Sweden, but she is one of the world's absolute best volleyball players, and as recently as December she was named the Club World Championship's Most Valuable Player when her new Italian club Conegliano took home the trophy. During her previous years in Turkiye, Haak was dubbed ‘Queen of the north’, and now in Italy she is known as ‘the Swedish Queen’.”

Haak will be in action again this weekend as Imoco welcome Igor Gorgonzola Novara for a 22nd leg fixture of the Italian league on Saturday.
