Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano’s supremacy in the Italian Supercoppa will continue for at least another year as the Panthers secured their sixth-straight and seventh overall title in the event on Saturday, in Livorno.

Playing in front of 7,750 fans, the Italian giants overcame rivals Allianz Vero Volley Milano in the match that reunited the best teams of the 2022-2023 Italian season and prevailed in four sets (26-24, 21-25, 25-23, 25-20) to successfully defend the title for the fifth time.

Since 2016-2017, Imoco have claimed the Supercoppa title a whopping seven times, only failing to do it in 2017-2018, then they fell to Igor Gorgonzola Novara and finished second. Milano, who played in the event for the first time, were the third different opponent beaten by the reigning Italian champions in the final.

Libero Monica De Gennaro and Dutch middle blocker Robin De Kruijf are the only players to be present in each of Imoco’s seven Supercoppa victories.

Polish star setter and Imoco’s captain Joanna Wołosz was one of the big names of the team’s victory, taking home the match’s MVP award. Besides orchestrating the champions’ offense and leading her teammates on the court, the 33-year-old setter also produced four points, with two aces, one kill and one block.

“I’m so happy and proud of my team,” Wołosz celebrated. “Milano is a truly well-built team, with so many stars, and I’m very happy with this result. We’re coming from a long summer with our national teams and are not at our best yet. I believe we made some unusual mistakes, but we reacted and played an excellent match.”

The highly-anticipated scoring battle between Imoco’s Isabelle Haak and Milano’s Paola Egonu, who played her former team for the first time in a Milano jersey, also went the Panthers’ way with the Swedish opposite firing 25 points (22 kills, two blocks, one ace) to the Italian superstar’s 21 (18 kills, two blocks, one ace).

Middle blocker Sarah Fahr, who missed most of the last two seasons due to knee injuries, was also in great form in Livorno as the 22-year-old player tallied 14 points in the Supercoppa, with 11 kills, two blocks and one ace. Her performance was even more important because Imoco couldn’t count on Marina Lubian due to an injury.

Back to the Italian League

Imoco won’t have much time to celebrate their Supercoppa victory as the Panthers will be back on the court on Wednesday to play their third Lega Pallavolo Femminile Serie A match of the season against Savino Del Bene Scandicci, on the road. On the same day, Milano will face Volley Bergamo 1991, also as visitors.
