The eighth weekend of the 2021-2022 Italian women’s league could join the history books as defending champions Prosecco Doc Imoco Volley Conegliano will play to improve on the Guinness World Record for consecutive victories in the sport when they host Delta Despar Trentino on Sunday at 17.00 CET/16.00 GMT.

The winners of the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship have already tied the current record of 73 consecutive victories, which they currently share with Turkish club VakifBank Istanbul, who had a similar run from 2012 to 2014. Their 73rd win came last weekend with their road victory against Bosca S.Bernardo Cuneo.

The Panthers, who sit at the top of the standings with eight wins, will have the opportunity to celebrate with their fans if they break the record this weekend as the match will be played at the Pala Verde Villorba. Their opponents, Trentino, are currently bottom of the table with just one win in seven matches.

The Italian league leaders last lost a match nearly two years ago, on December 12, 2019, when they fell to Perugia.

“We want more, we want to continue on the same path and break the record,” setter Joanna Wolosz said after last weekend’s match. “It could be a very special day in our stadium and we really want to do it.”

The Polish setter has been one of Conegliano’s top performers this season alongside star opposite Paola Egonu, who is by far the league’s top scorer with 142 points, and the second-best server, with 14 aces. Despite their inconsistent campaign, Trentino have two players leading statistical categories in the season – opposite Vittoria Piani, who ranks above Egonu in aces with 15, and libero Ilenia Moro, who has the most perfect passes in the league with 80.

Two teams who want to challenge Conegliano’s dominance in the country, third-placed Savino Del Bene Scandicci and fifth-placed Unet E-Work Busto Arsizio, will also try to build on midweek victories in continental competition to not lose ground on the leaders.

Scandicci, who defeated Greece’s ASP Tethis Voulas Athens in the CEV Challenge Cup on Thursday, will be on the road to play against tenth-placed Bartoccini Fortinfissi Perugia on Sunday at 17.00 CET/16.00 GMT. At the same date and time, Busto, who triumphed over Belgium’s VDK Bank Gent Dames in the CEV Cup, will play as visitors against ninth-placed Volley Bergamo.

Two other matches are scheduled to take place at the same time – the meeting between second-place Igor Gorgonzola Novara and 12th-placed Acqua & Sapone Roma Volley and the duel involving sixth-placed Il Bisonte Firenze and 13th-placed Megabox Ondulati Del Savio Vallefoglia.

The weekend begins on Saturday, at 20.30 CET/19.30 GMT, when fourth-placed Vero Volley Monza take on eighth-place VBC Trasporti Pesanti Casalmaggiore. The last match scheduled this weekend reunites Cuneo (11th) and Chieri (seventh), and begins at 19.30 CET/18.30 GMT on Sunday.
