Maya Ogbogu seizes her Team USA moment in Chile

Maya Ogbogu is already getting a taste of where she hopes volleyball can take her, wearing the USA jersey and competing against the world’s best young players at the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U17 World Championship.

At 1.83 meters, the outside hitter from Allen, Texas, has plenty to look forward to. She is still in high school, already playing for her country and getting the chance in Chile to see how she measures up against the best players her age from around the world.

And she has big plans.

“I always played sports when I was younger, so I wanted to go pro,” Ogbogu said. “Once I really got into volleyball, I knew I wanted to be an Olympian. That was my goal.”

Wearing the USA jersey has brought that goal a little closer. It has also put Ogbogu in a gym with teammates who are chasing many of the same things she is.

“Representing Team USA has been an amazing experience,” Ogbogu said. “Being surrounded by such like-minded people is amazing for my development and for helping me get prepared for the next level.”

Ogbogu already knows what it feels like to win with this age group. She helped the United States capture the 2025 NORCECA Girls’ U17 Continental Championship, earning Most Valuable Player and Best Spiker honors as the team qualified for the World Championship.

There is plenty happening away from international volleyball, too. Ogbogu plays for Allen High School in Texas and has committed to Texas A&M as a member of the Class of 2028.

With success comes attention, and growing up as a young athlete now also means dealing with a world that follows players well beyond the court.

Ogbogu has found her own way of keeping everything in perspective.

“Social media definitely plays a big part in it, so praying and talking with my family members and friends helps,” Ogbogu said. “Knowing that I’m someone outside of volleyball is really important for my longevity in the game. It’s about finding my identity outside of my sport.”

Her parents are a big part of that world away from volleyball.

They have been there through the practices, competitions and moments of doubt, making the sacrifices that Ogbogu says have allowed her to keep chasing opportunities such as the one she has now in Chile.

“My parents, for sure,” Ogbogu said when asked who has believed in her the most. “They’ve kept me grounded and helped me, and they’ve sacrificed so much for me. Having them with me along the way and helping me through it all has been amazing.”

That support matters in a sport in which Ogbogu has learned quickly that very little happens alone.

Her individual honors may already include an MVP award at the continental championship but ask her what volleyball has taught her and she talks about everyone else on the court.

“Volleyball is the ultimate team sport, so it taught me how to lean on my support system and lean on my team,” Ogbogu said. “You can’t score without the other people around you helping you. I feel like that translates into your community, the workforce and everything.”

The World Championship in Chile gives Ogbogu another to test herself against the best players her age from around the world. It also puts her in front of younger girls who may one day hope to represent the United States themselves.

Ogbogu knows what she would like them to see when they look her way.

Not simply an outside hitter playing for the USA, but a teammate they would want beside them.

“I would like them to see me as a good teammate, someone who uplifts the people around me and has great energy,” Ogbogu said. “But also someone who is hardworking and driven and willing to do whatever it takes to help the team and win.”

There will be time to think about everything that could come next.

The Olympic Games remain the dream. College volleyball at Texas A&M is also part of her future. Right now, Ogbogu has a World Championship in front of her and the USA flag on the front of her jersey, a pretty good place to be for a young player with big goals.

And she is only getting started.
