Jenna Gray's distribution helped three Osasco players register more than 15 points against the Asian champions

Hosts Osasco São Cristovão Saúde won the first tie-breaker of the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship on Thursday, got the job done and will compete in the tournament's Final Four over the weekend in São Paulo.

The Brazilian side only had to win two sets against Kazakhstan's Zhetysu VC in the last pool play match of the tournament to advance, but went beyond and triumphed 3-2 (25-17, 23-25, 21-25, 25-18, 19-17) at the Mercado Livre Arena Pacaembu, confirming their presence in the semifinals.

With five points accumulated (two wins, one loss), Osasco advanced as the second-placed team in Pool A and will face defending champions Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano, who topped Pool B, in the second semifinal, scheduled for 16:30 local time (19:30 UTC) on Saturday. Another duel involving teams from Brazil and Italy will happen earlier, at 13:00 (16:00 UTC), with Pool A winners Savino Del Bene Scandicci facing Pool B runners-up Dentil Praia Clube.

The 2012 world champions, Osasco are set to compete in the semifinals for the fifth time in six appearances. Returning to the event for the first time since 2017, they also won silver in 2010 and 2014 and bronze in 2011.

American outside hitter Caitie Bird was instrumental in the team's decisive victory, leading Osasco's offense with 20 points (18 kills, two blocks). Middle blocker Mayhara Francini, who produced 17 (12 kills, five blocks), and Argentine opposite Bianca Cugno, who added 16 (13 kills, two blocks, one ace), also had productive shifts.

"We started well, but they made some changes and we struggled a little bit with them," Mayhara reflected. "But this match showed the strength of our squad, because we made many changes too, and everyone was ready to help when they were called. I'm proud of the team and our performance today shows that our hard work is paying off and the team is improving."

Leading Zhetysu in the last match of their first appearance in the Club World Championship were opposite Perizat Nurbergenova and middle blocker and team captain Kristina Anikonova, who registered 12 points each.
