Italian giants Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano had a smooth start to their title defense at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship in São Paulo on Tuesday.

Pushed by the Brazilian fans, who packed the stands to support their national team captain Gabriela 'Gabi' Guimarães, the Panthers dominated the USA's Orlando Valkyries to win 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-19) and earned their first victory in Pool B.

One of the most dominant teams in women's volleyball worldwide, Conegliano are trying to level Turkish giants VakıfBank Istanbul as the most successful club at the Club World Championship. The winners of the 2019, 2022 and 2024 editions of the tournament, the Italians are looking for a fourth title in Brazil, which would tie the Turkish victories in 2013, 2017, 2018 and 2021.

One of the team's main stars, Swedish opposite Isabelle Haak helped Conegliano take a confident first step in their world title defense, producing 21 points (15 kills, four aces, two blocks) against the Valkyries. Outside hitters Zhu Ting and Gabi came next, with 13 and 11 points registered, respectively.

"It was a perfect start for us in the tournament," setter Joanna Wołosz said. "We love the Brazilian fans, and it was amazing to play here with this crowd. We almost felt like home."

Playing their first Club World Championship match in club history, Orlando saw team captain and opposite Brittany Abercrombie leave the court as their most productive player against the Italian giants, with nine points scored, all in kills.

Earlier on Tuesday, Brazil's Dentil Praia Clube topped Egypt's Zamalek Sporting Club 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-15) in the other Pool B match. On Wednesday, the four teams will be back in action, with Brazilians and Americans meeting at 10:00 local time (13:00 UTC) and Italians and Egyptians dueling at 17:00 (20:00 UTC).
