Ohio State entered the 2023 Big Ten women’s volleyball season with a new look following the departures of setter Mac Podraza and libero Kylie Murr, who transferred to conference rivals Penn State and Minnesota, respectively.

The remaining piece in the ‘Big Three’ that was heavily involved with everything the Buckeyes did on the court in the last few seasons, senior Emily Londot was tasked with leading the team in 2023 and, with 13 games into the season, it’s fair to say she’s been up to the challenge.

If in previous years Londot, who used to play as an opposite, was mainly tasked with scoring points for the Buckeyes, now she has a much larger role with the team, having moved to outside hitter, where she also has passing and digging responsibilities.

Besides that, as one of just three seniors in the squad and arguably the player the underclassmen look up to, she has also stepped into more of a leadership role with the team.

“She’s taking a massive load for this team, not only physically but also emotionally, and she’s handling it with such poise that I think it’s remarkable,” head coach Jen Flynn Oldenburg said. “We moved her to outside hitter and she’s now handling more load on serve-receive, which is not an easy task to do, and she’s one of our best passers. She has to be ready to go at all times. She’s done a great job for us in terms of leadership alongside the other seniors. They’re coming to play, setting the standards and holding our team accountable, which is exactly what we need with this young group.”

One of just three Ohio State players to have played in each set in the team’s first 13 matches in the season, Londot has indeed quickly adapted to her new role with the team. Besides leading the Buckeyes’ offense again with 220 kills registered so far (and 12 matches with ten or more kills), she’s also the team’s second-best defender with 101 digs and ranks third on serve-receive, with 160 passes. She’s also been selected as the Big Ten Player of the Week at the end of August.

“It’s definitely different than being on the right, but I’m just here to do whatever my team needs, and wherever the coach decides to put me, I’ll do my best,” the senior commented. “The end goal is to win games, and if winning games comes with me being on the left, I think that’s what we’ll do.”

After winning two of their four Big Ten matches and falling to powerhouses Wisconsin and Nebraska, Ohio State will have another pair of conference duels this week. The Buckeyes will go on the road against Rutgers on Friday, at 19:00 local time (23:00 UTC), in a match that will be streamed live for VBTV subscribers around the world, before visiting Penn State on Saturday.
