Tokyo Great Bears v Hokkaido Yellow Stars
Men’s Daido Life SV.League – Japan
When: Saturday, October 17, at 05:05 UTC (14:05 local time) and Sunday, October 18, at 05:05 UTC (14:05 local time)
Why: The opening double header of the 2026-2027 season in the men’s Daido Life SV.League will be played at the iconic Ariake Coliseum, which hosted the Tokyo 2020 Olympic volleyball games. The volleyball fans, impatient for the start of the new league, are quite likely to fill up the stands. On one side of the court, they will get to see stars like Polish opposite Bartosz Kurek, Slovenian middle Jan Kozamernik and outside hitters Masahiro Yanagida and Argentina’s Luciano Vicentin, heading into another season with Great Bears. On the other, they will witness the SV.League debut of rookies Hokkaido Yellow Stars, spearheaded by Taiwanese opposite Chang Yu-Sheng.
NEC Red Rockets Kawasaki v Victorina Himeji
Women’s Daido Life SV.League – Japan
When: Saturday, October 17, at 09:35 UTC (18:35 local time) and Sunday, October 18, at 09:35 UTC (18:35 local time)
Why: The women’s SV.League in Japan is about to get into a full swing for its second weekend, after the new season served off last weekend with only one double header, played in Thailand. In the most interesting of the six match-ups this weekend, NEC Red Rockets Kawasaki will host Victorina Himeji. NEC Red Rockets, 2025-2026 regular season winners and bronze medalists, as well as AVC Women’s Champions League gold medalists, are set to represent their country and their continent at December’s FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship. National team star Nichika Yamada and incoming Korean standout Lee Da-Hyeon will lead the team’s middle blocker department, while Italian opposite Sylvia Nwakalor is expected to bring in the points in large numbers. Swedish outside Anna Haak is among the new additions to Victorina Himeji, who finished in fifth place last season. High-caliber Bulgarian middle Mira Todorova and Italian opposite Camilla Mingardi are returning for another year. Last season, NEC won all four SV.League encounters with Himeji.
Rana Verona v Cucine Lube Civitanova
Men’s SuperLega Credem Banca – Italy
When: Saturday, October 17, at 16:00 UTC (18:00 local time)
Why: This is certainly the must-watch game of the weekend, not only because it will offer the excitement of the new Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca season opener, but also because two of the best teams last season will go up against one another. Hosts Rana Verona had a historic season, winning the Coppa Italia national cup and a SuperLega bronze, both firsts for the club. Visitors Cucine Lube Civitanova arrive at the new season as runners-up of each of the previous two. Both sides are featuring star-studded squads. Olympic beach volleyball champion Anders Mol of Norway is set to make his SuperLega debut, after a rare beach-to-indoor conversion, as a teammate of American setter Micah Christenson, outside hitters Rok Mozic of Slovenia and Noumory Keita of Mali, and Italian middle blockers Lorenzo Cortesia and Simone Anzani, among others. Lube will be spearheaded by the league’s best scorer last season, Bulgarian outside Aleksandar Nikolov, but now he is joined by his younger brother, prodigy setter Simeon Nikolov. Outsides Mattia Bottolo and Canada’s Eric Loeppky, middles Giovanni Gargiulo and Canada’s Jackson Howe, and libero Fabio Balaso are among the other most notable stars on the team’s roster. In 2025-2026, Lube shut out Verona twice during the regular season, Verona beat Lube in a super cup semifinal, and when they also met in a SuperLega semifinal playoff, the Civitanova side turned it around from losing game one to winning the next three. The all-time head-to-head record between the two clubs stands at 50-12 heavily in favor of Lube.
DevelopRes Rzeszow v MOYA Radomka Radom
Women’s TAURON Liga – Poland
When: Saturday, October 17, at 18:30 UTC (20:30 local time)
Why: This will be a clash between two undefeated teams, who will try to keep their excellent starting streaks in the women’s TAURON Liga going. Last season’s silver medalists and Poland Super Cup winners DevelopRes started their season with a 3-2 away win over LKS Commercecon Lodz and followed up with a four-set home victory over Sokol & Hagric Mogilno, both with an excellent showing from middle blocker Weronika Centka-Tietianiec. Meanwhile, with outside hitters Aleksandra Dudek and Ukraine’s Marta Fedyk, Radomka achieved a straight-set sweep on the road at Sokol & Hagric and squeezed out a nail-biting tie-breaker win at home against #VolleyWroclaw. Despite standing below their second-placed opponents in the current table, third-placed DevelopRes are the heavy favorites in the match. In fact, Radomka has managed to beat DevelopRes only once in 18 TAURON Liga matches played, and that was some three years ago.
ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle v BOGDANKA LUK Lublin
Men’s TAURON Liga – Poland
When: Sunday, October 18, at 13:00 UTC (15:00 local time)
Why: The game between ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle and BOGDANKA LUK Lublin seems to be the most exciting fixture of the opening leg of the rebranded men’s TAURON Liga (previously PlusLiga) in Poland. Although the Kedzierzyn-Kozle club with a glorious past has not medaled in the past three PlusLiga seasons, ZAKSA are always capable of living up to the powerhouse status they once had. Reinforced with experienced German setter Jan Zimmermann and Dutch middle blocker Fabian Plak, they are set to welcome last season's runners-up and winners of the Poland Cup and the Poland Super Cup BOGDANKA LUK Lublin on Sunday. To add to the excitement, the game is set to present the TAURON Liga debut of BOGDANKA’s new Japanese additions – outside Ran Takahashi and libero Tomohiro Ogawa. Having won the last four PlusLiga encounters with ZAKSA, the club from Lublin has taken an 8-5 lead in the all-time head-to-head record in the league.
Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie v ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle
(Men’s TAURON Liga – Poland)
When: Wednesday, October 21, at 18:30 UTC (20:30 local time)
Why: As if facing BOGDANKA in a season opener was not enough of a challenge for the start of a new competition, for their second game, ZAKSA will have to travel to none other than Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie – defending league champions, FIVB Volleyball Men's Club World Championship bronze medalists and CEV Champions League silver medalists. With star outside Tomasz Fornal, star middle blocker Jakub Kochanowski and Italian international opposite Kamil Rychlicki having joined the squad, Warta seems even stronger this season than their most successful season ever, 2025-2026. Last season, Warta won four of the five encounters with ZAKSA. The team from Kedzierzyn-Kozle managed to surprise them only in the opening game of their quarterfinal playoff, but ZAKSA still lead the head-to-head record in the league by 15-12.
