PGE Budowlani Lodz v LKS Commercecon Lodz
(TAURON Liga Kobiet – Poland)
When: Friday, October 9, at 20:30 local time (18:30 UTC)
Why: The big Lodz derby in Polish women’s volleyball is already about to take place in the second leg of TAURON Liga Kobiet regular season action. This is the first time LKS Commercecon will challenge their city rivals while PGE Budowlani are enjoying a defending champions’ status. Last season, Budowlani not only triumphed with the national title for the first time in the club’s history, but also doubled it with the national cup trophy. Spearheaded by Swiss opposite Maja Storck, Romanian national team captain Rodica Buterez and Slovenian middle blocker Sasa Planinsec, returning to defend the crown they earned last season, Budowlani’s attack is now conducted by experienced incoming setter Katarzyna Wenerska. LKS Commercecon are three-time champions, but not since 2023. Last season, they finished fifth. Featuring a very international roster, last Sunday LKS opened their season with a five-set battle against 2026 runners-up DevelopRes Rzeszow, which they lost despite a great performance of new additions like Croatian setter Karla Antunovic, Dutch opposite Elles Dambrink or Finnish outside hitter Suvi Kokkonen. Last season, Budowlani beat Commercecon in both TAURON Liga encounters between the two clubs, but LKS still lead the all-time head-to-head in the league by 18-13.
Saga Hisamitsu Springs v Aleeza Aichi
(Women’s SV.League – Japan)
When: Saturday, October 10, at 18:05 local time (09:05 UTC) and Sunday, October 11, at 18:05 local time (09:05 UTC)
Why: This is the much anticipated season opener of the Japanese SV.League. This double header will go down in history as the first ever official Japanese league games to be played outside the country, as it will delight the Thai volleyball fans at the Indoor Stadium Huamark in Bangkok. The significance of these matches to the home crowd is further enhanced by the participation of two Thai players, one on each side of the net. Defending champions Saga Hisamitsu Springs’ middle blocker Hattaya Bamrungsuk and iconic setter Nootsara Tomkom of Aleeza Aichi (formerly known as Queenseis Kariya) are set to enter their second season with their respective Japanese clubs. Last season, the two clubs split the wins in both double headers they played against each other.
UNI Opole v BKS ZGO Bielsko-Biala
(TAURON Liga Kobiet – Poland)
When: Sunday, October 11, at 15:00 local time (13:00 UTC)
Why: Last season’s semifinalists UNI Opole and BKS ZGO Bielsko-Biala are set to meet one another on Sunday. Both teams entered the new season with tough five-set duels last week. UNI Opole returned to action after their historic first TAURON Liga bronze last season with a tough home encounter with mighty LOTTO Chemik Police, which they lost narrowly in the tie-breaker despite a strong showing from their experienced opposite Katarzyna Zaroslinska-Krol. The squad from Bielsko-Biala, powered by Dutch outside Iris Vos, started with a 3-2 away victory over Metalkas Palac Bydgoszcz. UNI and BKS ZGO met as many as seven times last season, with the team from Opole winning five of those encounters, while the girls from Bielsko-Biala knocked their opponents out in a Poland Cup quarterfinal and beat them in one of the four games of their best-of-five bronze medal playoff series. The all-time TAURON Liga head-to-head between the two clubs stand level at nine victories each.
