The Volleyball Nations League (VNL) will introduce a remote Video Challenge System (VCS) hub for the 2026 edition, marking a significant step forward in the evolution of international volleyball operations and event delivery.
Delivered by Volleyball World in collaboration with VCS provider Bolt6, the new model will replace the fully on-site officiating structure previously used across VNL events. The initiative has been designed to enhance operational efficiency, support a more scalable and sustainable approach to competition delivery, while maintaining the high officiating standards expected at elite international events.
Under the updated system, two Challenge Referees and one Bolt6 operator will no longer travel to each VNL event, with selected officiating and technical functions instead operated remotely through a centralised hub.
The new model is expected to deliver significant sustainability benefits with air travel emissions projected to decrease by more than 51%, equivalent to a reduction of approximately 56 tonnes of CO2e compared to the previous operational model.
In addition to supporting Volleyball World’s wider sustainability ambitions, the remote VCS hub is expected to generate operational efficiencies and cost optimisation benefits across the competition ecosystem.
The introduction of remote officiating operations also aligns with broader innovation trends across global sport, where centralised and remote technology solutions are increasingly being adopted to improve consistency, efficiency and long-term operational sustainability.
VNL 2026 will serve as a pilot edition for the remote VCS hub model, enabling Volleyball World and its partners to test, evaluate and further refine the system ahead of potential long-term implementation across future competitions.
Marcelo Hargreaves da Costa, Chief Product Officer at Volleyball World, said: “VNL has always served as a platform for innovation and operational progression within volleyball, and the introduction of the remote VCS hub is another important step in that evolution. By working closely with Bolt6 and leveraging proven remote operations expertise, we are creating a more efficient and sustainable operational model while continuing to deliver the highest standards of officiating across the competition.”
The introduction of the remote VCS hub reinforces VNL’s commitment to innovation, operational excellence and the continued evolution of volleyball’s global event ecosystem.
