Today, the third episode of Rotations, the exclusive interview series hosted by Brazilian volleyball legend Bruno Rezende, featuring USA Volleyball teammates Micah Christenson and Erik Shoji has been released. Filmed during VNL (Volleyball Nations League), the episode explores the lifelong friendship between two of the sport's most respected athletes, their shared upbringing in Hawaii, the evolution of their careers, the lessons learned from the Paris Olympic Games and how family continues to shape their lives both on and off the court.

For Christenson and Shoji, their stories have always been intertwined. As Shoji reflects, "You can't tell one story without the other." Growing up in Hawaii, where volleyball is deeply embedded in the local culture, both players found inspiration in the legends who came before them, particularly Olympic champion Clay Stanley. Although they competed against one another throughout high school, their friendship only strengthened, developing into a partnership built on mutual trust, accountability and exceptionally high standards.

The episode also explores the role family played in shaping their passion for volleyball. Shoji grew up in a volleyball obsessed household, with his father coaching at university level and Christenson becoming "like another son" to the family. Meanwhile, Christenson's first sporting love was basketball, following in the footsteps of his father who played professionally, before volleyball became his own calling. Despite sport always being central to their childhoods, neither believed a professional volleyball career was a realistic pathway until they reached college, highlighting how far the sport has developed for the next generation.

Reflecting on more than a decade representing the United States, Christenson and Shoji discuss how their mindset has evolved with experience. Christenson explains how maturity has transformed his approach to competition, replacing emotion with  composure while maintaining the same passion that has always driven him. Shoji shares how overcoming shyness taught him the importance of communication as a leader. Together, they revisit their Olympic journey, including the disappointment of losing the semi final in Paris, acknowledging that lessons learned from previous Games, particularly Rio, helped them feel they truly belonged on volleyball's biggest stage.

Beyond elite sport, the conversation offers a personal insight into the people behind two of volleyball's biggest names. Christenson speaks openly about wanting to be remembered for more than volleyball, explaining how returning home to his children after Paris reminded him that his identity extends far beyond the court. For both athletes, home is defined not by a place, but by where their families are. The episode closes with lighter moments, from Christenson's love of steak to Shoji's inability to live without sushi, reinforcing that behind two of the world's most accomplished volleyball players are lifelong friends whose greatest motivations now extend well beyond the game.

The third episode of ROTATIONS is available to watch now on Volleyball World's YouTube channel, and to listen to on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. New episodes will be released every two weeks.
