The men’s main draw at the 2025 FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championships served off on Thursday with the first leg of pool play and all 32 teams hitting the sand in Puebla for their main draw openers. As many as five three-set matches sparked excitement among the fans and set the tone for more thrilling action in the days to come.

In one of these three-setters, Switzerland’s Julian Friedli & Tim Pirmin Amrein overcame the resistance of Kazakhstan’s Klim Ryukhov & Vladislav Mastikhin to get their Pool C campaign underway with a 2-1 (21-11, 19-21, 15-9) victory.

“It was a really fun game against a more or less unknown team. They gave us a really, really strong fight. I wish them the best for the rest of the tournament,” Friedli said about the match, and continued. “It is fun to play here in Mexico. I love Mexico! The people are so nice and cheering us on.”

In the same pool, the much anticipated clash between 2022 U19 world champions Gustavs Auzins & Kristians Fokerots of Latvia and 2024 U19 world champions Szymon Pietraszek & Jakub Krzeminski ended 2-0 (21-16, 21-19) Latvia’s way.

In the longest men’s match of the day in Puebla, Czechia’s Vojtech Pavlusek & Vojtech Votava squeezed out a thrilling 2-1 (21-13, 18-21, 16-14) victory over Namibia’s Max Krafft & Jura Krafft. The Africans were actually first to reach match point at 14-13 in the tie-breaker, but the Europeans reacted with three in a row to triumph victorious. In the other Pool B game, Norwegian qualifiers Even Aas & Jonah Utvik hammered out a 2-0 (21-16, 21-16) shutout of Poland’s Szymon Beta & Artem Besarab.

In Pool D, Iran’s AmirAli GhalehNovi & Habib Naseri came back from a set down against Ukrainian qualifiers Dmytro Kozii & Sviatoslav Nahornyi to celebrate a 2-1 (16-21, 21-12, 15-11) victory, while China’s Liu Yuan & Mao Yuan put together a 2-0 (21-18, 21-18) sweep of their game against Argentina’s Marcos Gonzalez & Brais Del Coto.

Italian qualifiers Andrea Sanguanini & Matteo Iurisci came back from losing an epic first set against Hungary’s Bence Tari & Akos Veress to mount a 2-1 (24-26, 21-11, 15-9) win in Pool E. Meanwhile, Australia’s Finley Bennett & James Kay mastered a 2-0 (21-15, 21-17) shutout of Morocco’s Abdellatif Ourhdach & Ilyas Karbal in the same pool.

Another three-setter unfolded in Pool A. Canada’s Louis Charbonneau & Henry Heider coped with the tough resistance of Thailand’s Paphawin Manyahong & Wichaya Wisetkan and registered a 2-1 (21-19, 17-21, 15-10) victory, while home favorites Antonio Lares & Carlos Andres Ayala pleased the sell-out crowd on the stands with an emphatic 2-0 (21-16, 21-14) shutout of the lucky losers from the qualifications Casper Willems & Alexy Humblet of Belgium.

The remaining three pools offered straight-set resolutions in their opening matches. In Pool F, Germany’s Tristan Frobel & Tamo Wust produced a 2-0 (21-17, 21-14) win over Ecuador’s Isaac Jimenez & Alfredo Velez, while Lebanon’s Hadi El Chabib & Jad Abi Karam claimed a 2-0 (21-7, 22-20) victory over El Salvador’s Rafael Vargas & Fernando Ponce.

In Pool G, Chile’s George Hargreaves & Jose Brain mastered a 2-0 (21-18, 21-16) victory over Paraguay’s Juanangel Gomez & Gaston Armadans, while Brazil’s Joao Mares & Henrique Barros hammered out a 2-0 (21-18, 21-13) sweep of their game against Dominican Republic’s Ramon De Jesus & Melvin De Jesus.

Costa Rica’s Julian Araya & Esteban Flores celebrated a 2-0 (21-12, 23-21) win over Egypt’s Abdelrahman Elfeky & Marwan Takyeldeen in Pool H. In the other pool match, USA’s Malachi Brewington & Titus Lance took a 2-0 (21-13, 21-14) victory over Mozambique’s Ednilson Tivane & Helton Guvo.
