Libya’s Swehly Misrata emerged as the first Libyan team in history to triumph as continental club champions and earn the right to compete at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship. They conquered the title at the Men’s African Volleyball Club Championship, which they hosted in Misrata after a dramatic five-set battle in Tuesday’s final against Tunisia’s Esperance Sportive de Tunis.

Swehly won all eight of the matches they played during the championship and Esperance were the first opponent to push them to five sets. In a rollercoaster gold medal showdown, the Libyan team celebrated a 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11) victory with their Egyptian opposite Ahmed Salah Abdelhay delivering a match-high 32 points.

In Monday’s semifinals, Swehly achieved a 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 27-29, 25-22) win over Rwanda’s APR Kigali, while Esperance dethroned last year’s African champions Al Ahly Cairo of Egypt in a 3-2 (25-21, 25-18, 18-25, 23-25, 15-7) battle. Al Ahly bounced back with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-18) sweep of the third-place match against APR to claim the bronze.

A total of 23 teams representing Algeria, Cameroon, Congo DR, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Libya, Morocco, Rwanda, Tunisia and Uganda took part in the competition.
