Last year’s FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship semifinalists Dentil Praia Clube triumphed in the opening match of the 2024-2025 Brazilian Women’s Superliga on Wednesday.

Playing at home, the two-time national champions downed in-state rivals Batavo Mackenzie in straight sets (25-22, 25-21, 25-23) to collect their first three points in the season.

The Brazilian Men’s and Women’s Superliga matches are available live for VBTV subscribers located in Brazil.

One of Praia’s signings for the 2024-2025 season, Brazilian national team setter and two-time Olympic medalist Macris Carneiro was awarded the Player of the Match. Because of her solid distribution, three of the team’s hitters reached double digits in scoring – American outside hitter Payton Caffrey (16), opposite Maiara Basso (13) and Russian outside hitter Sofya Kuznetsova (12).

“I’m very happy and grateful,” Macris said. “It’s important for us to get into a rhythm and gain confidence. We know we could have played better in the first matches of the season (the Mineiro Championship and the Supercup), but we’re looking to improve every day. It’s important that we remain focused and have positive thoughts at the start of the season.”

Outside hitter Gabriella ‘Gabiru’ Souza scored 15 points for Mackenzie, a Belo Horizonte club where Brazilian superstars Sheilla Castro, Gabriela ‘Gabi’ Guimarães and Ana Carolina ‘Carol’ da Silva started their careers and that’s back in the Brazilian elite for the first time since 2012.
