Melissa/Brandie (CAN) vs. Thamela/Victoria (BRA) - Pool A #120562779

Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes is the brightest star to grace the NORCECA sand courts in Puerto Rico this week

The 2026 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Continental Championships are about to get underway on Friday at the Areia Sports Complex in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. The event serves as the continental qualifier for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, so on Sunday, the women’s and the men’s gold medalists of the NORCECA Championships will have secured Olympic quotas for their countries. It is the last of a series of volleyball and beach volleyball continental events of all confederations that handed LA 2028 tickets to their winners.

10 women’s and 13 men’s pairs have gathered in Puerto Rico to contest the NORCECA continental medals and chase their Olympic dreams.

The women’s duos are grouped into two round-robin pools of five. The first-placed teams in the pools will progress directly to Sunday’s semifinals, while the second and the third-placed pairs will form two crossed match-ups for Saturday’s quarterfinals.

The presence of two former world champions highlights the line-up for the women’s competition. Melissa Humana-Paredes, who triumphed with the world title in 2019, and her current partner Brandie Wilkerson, who took silver at the 2022 World Championship, are both two-time Olympians and together they earned the silver medals at the Paris 2024 Games. Now, they are number seven in the women’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Ranking.

In Vega Baja, the Canadian duo will start off in Pool B, in the company of 2022 world champion and two-time Olympian Kelly Cheng, representing the United States alongside her current teammate Megan Kraft, a 2021 U19 world champion. The American pair is ranked sixth in the world, just above their main rivals in the pool – Melissa & Brandie.

Pool A is headlined by top-seeded Puerto Rican home favorites Allanis Navas & Keishlyann Sanchez, as well as Mexico’s Susana Torres & Abril Flores. Navas, a member of the world’s number 31 team with Maria Gonzalez, will hit the sand in Vega Baja with a new partner – international rookie Keishlyann Sanchez. Navas & Sanchez have played at only one international tournament together, taking silver at October’s NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tour stop in Punta Cana.

Torres & Flores have been a hit on this year’s NORCECA Tour, making the podium at each of their seven appearances on the continental circuit and collecting one gold, one silver and five bronze medals.

The other six women’s teams competing in Puerto Rico will represent Belize, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala and the US Virgin Islands.

The men’s teams are split into four round-robin pools, with the pool winners advancing straight to Saturday’s quarterfinals, while the pool runners-up and the third-placed teams move on to the eighthfinal round. Semifinals and medal matches will follow on Sunday on the way to the continental podium.

Mexico’s rising stars Antonio Lares & Carlos Andres Ayala are the top seed in the men’s bracket. They have won six of the seven NORCECA Tour stops they have taken part in so far this year and earned silver at the remaining one. They are also bronze medalists of last year’s FIVB U21 Beach Volleyball World Championship in Puebla and are now ranked number 41 in the men’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Ranking.

The second seed is for Canada’s Samuel Schachter & Jonathan Pickett, the highest ranked NORCECA duo, currently standing 19th in the world. Well-seasoned Schachter is a two-time Olympian and a 2010 U21 world champion.

An American pair - Trevor Crabb & Chase Budinger – are seeded third in the men’s main draw. Both in their late 30s, they bring in a wealth of experience. Budinger also played at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The recently formed pairing has already appeared at four Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour stops, claiming silver at the Gstaad Elite, and have already risen to number 44 in the World Ranking.

The above three duos will lead Pool A, B and C, while Pool D is headlined by fourth-seeded Puerto Rican home favorites Diego Rosich & William Rivera.

The remaining nine teams in the men’s draw in Vega Baja are from Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Trinidad & Tobago and the US Virgin Islands.
