Egypt’s Marwa Abdelhady & Doaa Elghobashy at the Paris 2024 Olympics

Just two days after the Netherlands and Sweden earned the first Olympic tickets in beach volleyball for Los Angeles 2028 (other than those for hosts USA), the contest for the next two begins in Africa. The second tournament that will issue tickets to next year’s Olympic Games is set to start on Tuesday in Egypt. On Sunday, the women’s and the men’s gold medalists of the 2026 CAVB Beach Volleyball African Championships in on Abu Haif Beach in the Sidi Bishr area of Alexandria will be crowned continental champions and will secure Olympic quotas for their countries.

21 women’s and 23 men’s pairs representing 24 different countries are entering the competition in Egypt, chasing their Olympic dream for LA 2028. In each gender, they are split into six single round-robin pools of four or three teams each. The pool winners, the pool runners-up and the two best-ranked third-placed duos will advance to the eighthfinals, while the remaining four third-placed teams will go through a sixteenthfinal round to fill up the two remaining vacancies among the last 16. Quarterfinals, semifinals and medal matches will follow to determine the final tournament standings.

Egypt’s Marwa Abdelhady & Doaa Elghobashy are the top-seeded team in the women’s competition. They already have Olympic experience, having represented their country and their continent at the Paris 2024 Games. Elghobashy also competed at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics and triumphed as African champion in 2019.

Reigning 2025 African champion Dina Mellal of Morocco and her current partner Imane Yakki, who took continental silver in 2022, are seeded second. Last year’s silver medalist Vanessa Muianga of Mozambique now plays alongside Ana Sinaportar. Vanessa & Sinaportar took African Championship bronze together in 2022. The continental champion of that year, Nora Darrhar, and Alexandra Erhart form another Moroccan duo to compete in Alexandria this week.

The bronze medalists of last year’s continental championship – Esther Mbah & Pamela Bawa of Nigeria – are also in Egypt entering

as the fourth seed in the women’s main draw. 2019 bronze medalist Liza Bonne of Mauritius is aiming at another African podium with Joanitta Latour by her side.

Lesotho’s Moroesi Tolofi & Neo Chapole, the highest placed African pair in the women’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Ranking, are another highlight on the participants’ list in Alexandria.

The men’s field features a Moroccan pairing of 2025 African champion Soufiane El Gharouti and the continental champion of the previous three editions Zouheir Elgraoui, who is also a 2025 silver medalist and a two-time Olympian. The duo is seeded second in the men’s main draw bracket in Alexandria.

The highest placed African team in the men’s FIVB World Ranking Jose Alberto Mondlane & Osvaldo Mungoi of Mozambique, who are also bronze medalists of the last two editions of the continental championship, are seeded third.

Bracket leaders Moaz Abdelkarim & Youssef Abdelrahman represent the host nation Egypt.
