Lorenzo Micelli was appointed as the new head coach of the Bulgarian women’s national team and is expected to lead the Lionesses as they participate in the FIVB Volleyball World Championship Netherlands-Poland 2022, the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup and the 2022 CEV European Golden League in his first season on the job.

The 51-year-old Italian specialist was named for the position by the Bulgarian national federation on Tuesday after they had narrowed their choice down to three candidatures. He takes over from Ivan Petkov, the previous head coach of Bulgaria, who took on a new challenge as the head coach of Ukraine.

Most recently, Micelli head coached the national team of Estonia. He also had several years of previous experience as an assistant coach of Italy and as such he won the FIVB Volleyball World Cup in 2007, the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Champions Cup in 2009 and the CEV European Championships in 2007 and 2009 among many other national team podiums, including two silvers and four bronzes in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix.
For the most part, Micelli’s career as a head coach has involved leading club teams. Currently, he is in charge of France’s Volero Le Cannet. His previous clubs include Italy’s Volley Bergamo, with whom he won two continental trophies in the CEV Champions League, Poland’s Atom Trefl Sopot, with whom he reached the final of the CEV Cup, as well as Turkey’s Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul, Poland’s Developres Rzeszow and several Italian teams, with numerous domestic trophies and medals under his belt.
