The Bulgarian Volleyball Federation (BFV) announced Antonina Zetova as the new head coach of the women’s volleyball national team. The legendary player reunites with the Lionesses in a new role with a contract for two plus two years, which means that it will be automatically extended то 2028, if the team meets its targets in Volleyball Nations League 2025, the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women World Championship and the 2026 CEV Volleyball European Championship. She takes over from Italian coach Lorenzo Micelli, who had been at the helm of the team since 2022.

“Her dedication to the sport, as well as the success she achieved this year, tilted our choice her way,” said BFV President Lubomir Ganev. “She has twice coached a national team and won medals. Perhaps also the inner hope that she, as a former teammate or a friend of many of these players who, due to family reasons or otherwise, are not part of the national team, will be able to convince them to rejoin the team.”

As a player, Toni Zetova was the star opposite of the Bulgarian national team for years. She spearheaded the Lionesses to a European Championship bronze in 2001, herself claiming the Most Valuable Player award. In her club career, she collected numerous domestic trophies in Bulgaria, Turkiye and Italy. Most importantly, with various Italian clubs, she triumphed as a continental champion with CEV Champions League gold in 2006, and collected another three trophies from European continental club competitions – the Top Teams Cup in 2005 and the CEV Cup in 2002 and 2007.

Since the start of her coaching career, 51-year-old Zetova has been assistant coaching at CSKA Sofia, but she also had a couple of very successful assignments head coaching age-group national teams to major international podiums. She steered Bulgaria to bronze at the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Women’s U23 World Championship. Earlier this year, Zetova led the young Lionesses to a historic continental title at the CEV U18 Volleyball European Championship, Bulgaria’s first ever in age-category women’s volleyball.

Bulgaria are currently 20th in the women’s FIVB Volleyball World Ranking. They finished 16th in Volleyball Nations League 2024 and, in 2025, they are set to compete in both the VNL and the World Championship in Thailand.
