LA 2028 men’s volleyball: who qualified so far

All five men’s volleyball continental qualifying events are now complete and the first phase of the qualification process for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games men’s volleyball competition has filled up five of the 12 vacancies. In addition to the United States, automatically qualified as LA 2028 hosts, the teams of Brazil, Cuba, Japan, Tunisia and Poland have also reserved their berths at the Games in two years.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

The United States are automatically qualified for Los Angeles 2028 as the host nation. It will be the third time they host the Olympic volleyball events, after Los Angeles 1984 and Atlanta 1996. It will be the 12^th consecutive and 14^th overall time the American men compete at the Olympics. They will arrive in Los Angeles as the bronze medalists of the previous Olympic Games Paris 2024. USA’s overall Olympic medal collection contains three golds (1984, 1988, 2008), and three bronzes. USA are currently number four in the FIVB World Ranking.

JAPAN

Japan defended their AVC Men's Volleyball Asian Championship crown at home in Fukuoka and reserved the first ticket to the LA 2028 Olympic Games men’s volleyball event, besides that of hosts USA. Japanese men will play at the Olympics for the third time in a row and the 11^th time overall. They played hosts to the first ever Olympic volleyball competition at Tokyo 1964, when they took bronze. They upgraded to silver and gold at the next two editions in 1968 and 1972. Japan stand fifth in the current World Ranking.

CUBA

Cuba are set to return to the Olympics after 12 years following their triumph at the NORCECA Men's Volleyball Continental Olympic Qualifier in Moncton, Canada. Cuba have played at the Games seven times. Their best result was the Montreal 1976 bronze. Now they are the world’s number 13 team.

BRAZIL

Present at every edition of the Olympics since volleyball joined the Games in 1964, Brazil's men's national team is set to keep its streak alive after qualifying for their 17^th consecutive appearance at LA 2028. The three-time Olympic champions (1992, 2004, 2016) did not drop a single set at the CSV Men’s Volleyball South American Championship, which they hosted in Rio de Janeiro, to win the continental competition and, thus, book a ticket to Los Angeles. In addition to the three golds, the world’s number six team has three silvers on its Olympic record.

TUNISIA

Playing at home in Tunis, Tunisia emerged as the winners of the CAVB Men's Volleyball African Nations Championship and claimed the continent's berth at the Olympics. At LA 2028, the northern African nation is set to make its eight Olympic appearance in men’s volleyball. Currently, Tunisia are the number 30 team in the World Ranking.

POLAND

World Ranking leaders Poland defended their CEV Men’s Volleyball European Championship title and booked their spot at LA 2028. They will return to the Olympic stage as silver medalists of the last edition at Paris 2024, when they made the Olympic podium for the second time in history, after their Montreal 1976 title. Overall, it will be Poland’s 12^th (seventh consecutive) appearance in Olympic men’s volleyball.

The next three Olympic tickets will be issued to the three highest-placed teams at next year’s 2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup in Poland among those that are not qualified yet.

The last three vacancies at the LA 2028 men’s volleyball tournament will be allocated through the World Ranking at the close of the 2028 Volleyball Nations League Preliminary Phase.
