Canadian national team setter Brie O’Reilly helped her team SESC RJ Flamengo secure a huge road win in the 2024-2025 Brazilian Women’s Superliga on Tuesday, beating longtime rivals Osasco São Cristovão Saúde on Tuesday.

Led by their star setter, Flamengo ignored the pressure at the sold-out José Liberatti stadium, in Osasco, to produce a massive 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 20-25, 25-23) victory.

The victory made the team coached by Brazil men’s national team head coach Bernardo ‘Bernardinho’ Rezende jump from fifth to third in the standings, with nine points (three wins, one loss) – Osasco have the same campaign and are second because of the tie-breakers. Both teams chase undefeated league leaders Dentil Praia Clube, who have 12 points (four wins).

Brie’s successful offensive strategy paved the way for Flamengo’s victory as it created the conditions for all of the team’s five starting hitters to get to double digits in scoring.

Outside hitters Michelle Pavão, who took home the MVP award, and Helena Henk had 15 points each, with Brazilian national team middle blocker Lorena Viezel adding 13 and opposite Edinara Brancher and middle blocker Juliana Gandra contributing 12 each.

“I’m very happy about our win, especially because we defeated one of the candidates to win the title and a team with a very strong roster,” Michelle reacted. “We were very relaxed and our game was just flowing. Brie’s distribution was excellent and she made really smart plays. We don’t have a player that will make a difference alone, we need everyone and that’s how we won tonight.”

Osasco had the match’s top scorer in opposite Tiffany Abreu, who came off the bench to deliver 19 points. Olympic champion outside hitter Natália Pereira came next, with 14.

“Nobody likes to lose, but we have lessons to learn from this match,” middle blocker Valquíria Dullius said. “Flamengo are a very tough opponent and we definitely didn’t play our best tonight. We made a lot of mistakes early on and that ended up costing us too much. But we have to keep our heads high and keep going.”
