Serbia and the Dominican Republic opened the second competition day in Kortrijk with a one-sided three-set game, in which the Balkan side proved superior to their Caribbean opponents in all scoring elements – serving (eight aces against two), blocking (eight stuffs against four) and spiking (40 kills against 24).
Substitute outside hitter Aleksandra Uzelac, who came in during the second set and stayed among the starters for the third, emerged as the top scorer of the match on a total of 12 points, including three blocks. The only other player to reach the double digits on either side of the net was her Serbian teammate, opposite Vanja Savic, with 11 points to her name, including two aces.
“The energy within our team was one of our strongest points today,” Vanja Savic said. “Along with some strong serving and blocking, we managed to get this win. I am very happy we are now in the top eight!”
