With outstanding performances from their international stars Simon Hirsch and Dejan Vincic, VfB Friedrichshafen outpaced Berlin Recycling Volleys on the way to the men’s Germany Cup final in a thrilling five-set semifinal played on Wednesday at the ratiopharm arena in Ulm and put an end to their opponents’ amazing series of 27 back-to-back wins across all competitions that started on March 24, 2021.

Slovenian national team setter Vincic brilliantly conducted Friedrichshafen’s offensive line, while German national team opposite Hirsh owned the net, putting away 18 kills at a success rate of 56%, five stuff blocks and an ace towards a match total of 24 points. Vincic, Hirsch and their teammates came back from a set down twice in the game to push it to a tie-breaker and eventually win by 3-2 (22-25, 25-15, 18-25, 25-14, 15-12). The Slovenian playmaker was named MVP of the match.

On the other side of the net, American international Benjamin Patch delivered the match high of 25 points, including four blocks, but that was not enough to keep Berlin on the winning track.

In the cup final on March 6, Friedrichshafen will take on SVG Luneburg at the SAP Arena in Mannheim.

"I rarely do that, but today I have to take my hat off to Simon Hirsch in particular. It was fantastic! We're going to enjoy this moment and then we'll get back to the league." Mark Lebedew, head coach of VfB Friedrichshafen
