Giulio Bregoli is the new head coach of the German women's national volleyball team. The 50-year-old Italian has signed with the German Volleyball Federation to lead the team until 2028. Bregoli replaces Alexander Waibl, who took over the team earlier this year after the surprise departure of Vital Heynen.

“We would like to thank Alex for his hard work. He led the team well through the summer despite the difficult circumstances with many injuries and the short time available,” said Christian Dunnes, responsible for the national team coaches at the federation. “Bregoli can lead experienced players as well as develop young players and form a team from a group. He can get the maximum out of teams, even with limited resources.”

Bregoli currently coaches Italy’s Reale Mutua Fenera Chieri '76 at the club level. He steered the team to the 2023 CEV Challenge Cup and the 2024 CEV Cup. His previous experience as a head coach included training the women’s national team of Sweden, leading them to the CEV Volleyball European Golden League trophy earlier this year, and the team of Saint-Raphael, whom he guided to promotion from France’s second division to the top league and then to each of the three big domestic trophies – the national champions title, the national cup and the national super cup. Bregoli has also celebrated plenty of success while assistant coaching the Italian women’s national team and other club teams from his country.

“It is a great honour for me to become a national team coach in Germany,” said Bregoli. “I am very proud. It is a great opportunity for me as I can work with fantastic players. We are a very young team. It will be important to create a good mix of young and experienced players and develop a clear vision of how we want to play volleyball. Of course, we want to improve our place in the World Ranking, but I don't like to look too far ahead. I prefer to focus on the next steps. We have to have a common vision and develop as a team step by step.”

Germany are currently 12th in the women’s FIVB Volleyball World Ranking. They finished 13th in Volleyball Nations League 2024 and are set to compete in VNL 2025 and the 2025 FIVB Volleyball World Championship in Thailand.
