Retired from the Brazilian women's volleyball national team since 2024, Ana Carolina 'Carol' da Silva was fighting her own personal battle outside the courts during the summer, when her former teammates traveled around the world to compete in the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) 2026.

Currently playing for Nebraska in the American League One Volleyball (LOVB), the 35-year-old middle blocker recently shared on social media the details of a health condition she had to deal with, delivering an incredibly impactful message about the importance of self-care and prevention.

Married to former Dutch national team captain Anne Bujis, Carol revealed that in April, during a routine check-up, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer.

"I was diagnosed in April, have already completed the entire treatment and am feeling very well," she said. "I had surgery in June, and then again in August. This was an extremely challenging period, in which I received a lot of information and had to make important decisions that will impact the rest of my life. But the most important thing is that I'm well and ready to live and to continue doing what I love."

The post, shared on the last day of September, conveyed an important message to her followers, as the two-time Olympic medalist highlighted the benefits of identifying the problem at an early stage and urged them to make time for their health and take prevention seriously.

"Prevention saves lives, and it saved mine," Carol said in the message. "So I wanted to ask you to please be very careful with your health. The tumor was detected in a very early stage in a routine test, and that allowed me to complete the treatment very well and to be out of danger now. So, please, take care of yourselves. It doesn't matter how busy your day is; always find some time for what's truly important. Find some time for yourself, put yourself first, and always remember that you're very important to yourself and to the people who love you. Living is an incredible gift, and taking care of our health depends only on us."

A member of the Brazilian national team from 2012 to 2024, Carol established herself as one of the top blockers in international volleyball history. Despite standing at only 1.83m, she set a handful of records in the sport, reaching the highest number of block points scored at both the VNL (63) and the FIVB World Championship (57) in 2022.

During her 12 years with Brazil, she earned two Olympic medals (silver in Tokyo 2020 and bronze in Paris 2024), another two at the World Championship (bronze in 2014 and silver in 2022) and three silvers (2019, 2021, 2022) in the VNL, among other achievements.

Carol also played in some of the top national leagues on the planet, winning five Brazilian Superliga titles and medals at the CEV Champions League (silver in 2024-2025) and the Italian League (silver in 2023-2024 and bronze in 2024-2025) with Savino Del Bene Scandicci.
